Rugby Union RWC and Season 2011-12

Posted by: JWM on 13 July 2011

Seems a good idea to turn over to a fresh page for the coming excitement!

We have got some months of RWC warm-up matches and the RWC itself, before we descend into the usual Wasps vs Tigers obsession

But to get us started, here's the fixture list for 2011-12 http://www.leicestertigers.com/rugby/fixtures.php

5th May, last round of the Premiership regular season and it's all to play for, all matches kicking off at 14:00hrs.

At a sell out Welford Road, 24,000 are looking to Tigers eating Bath for lunch with a bonus point win to go top of the league, after languishing in 11th at one point in the season.

11th, that's where Wasps are now, and playing Gosforth Newcastle, currently 12th and bottom, to beat the drop.  Wasps are playing for far more than this, for nothing less than their very survival, as staying in the Premiership is a requirement for their one rescue bid in place.  Newcastle, to be fair, have been anticipating going down for most of the season, and with a ground and Deano Richards in place as new Director of Rugby after today, they are probably in a better place to go down and come back up, renewed in a season or two.

Harlequins want to stop Tigers going top.  Saracens - and the rest of the league - want to stop Tigers having a home semi-final.  Northampton want to stop Exeter keeping them out of 4th place and the final play-off birth; and vice-versa.  And various others are battling to be in the top 6, to get a Heineken Cup berth for the 2012/13 season.

So all-in-all, exciting stuff.

All there is now (having buried the hamster - and yes, he was dead) is to have a shower and set off for Leicester.

T-IIII-GGG-EEE-RRRRR-SSSSSS!

Not the best way to clinch safety by losing to the bottom team, but it was very squeaky bum time. We looked fairly comfortable with Richard Haughton running riot through the Falcons midfield. Ben Broster's sending off changed the complexion of the game, though and the later inexplicable penalty Barnes awarded Newcastle when their no 21 should have been binned put them in our 22 and under pressure. Not sure of the name of their 21, I'll look out for him on the TV highlights!

It was good to see a packed ground today......at least we still have good support. With survival in the Premiership we also have a potential future with this consortium who have signed an agreement conditional on that fact. One of the few positives that has come out of this season is the number of Academy youngsters who have been blooded in the senior team because of the injuries and retirements we have suffered this season. It will be years before we trouble the likes of Tigers again, but at least we have hope of a future now.

Allez, allez, allez...........

I bet Steve Hayes whacks up the ground rent when the club is sold

Hello?........Hello?.............Anybody there?!!!

Yayyyy!

Go Quins!

Posted on: 27 May 2012 by deadlifter

Yes well done Quins and even if we had won i`d have said that they were the moral champions but we will see if they are good enough to be there next year and challenge the Tigers again.

As is my want though i do have to say that the Ref was inconsistant and shows why the english refs have been demoted from international dutys

What a win for Scotland!

Gutsy win by the Scots. I live fairly close to the ground and the weather was even worse than it looked on TV.

Posted on: 05 June 2012 by deadlifter

I did not get to see the game but well done the Jocks.

On another note it`s bloody annoying that the junior world cup is being shown on Sky......

Scotland.  A great pleasure to hear about.

A round trouncing of the northern hemisphere today. The NZ v Ireland game was particularly one-sided. Wales were disappointing against Australia who were clearly fired up. Nonetheless, if you have pretensions to greatness you have to win those games when the opportunities present themselves.

England gave a decent account of themselves in the first half, matching the Boks for physicality and beating them at the breakdown. They were then completely bullied in the second half, just like they were in 2010 after that particular autumnal false dawn. It'll only get worse in the next game on the high veld where the Springbok kicking game will be even more difficult to manage.

England will learn from this experience though, and will now know exactly what level of intensity is required at this level. It was good to see them cut loose towards the end and I would like to see a little more of this, in keeping with other Lancaster teams I have enjoyed watching. They will not win a purely physical battle with SA.
