Iradio and normal streaming

Posted by: SamSam on 16 July 2011

Hi all

I have a nainuniti connected with a nas. There where some occasion where I listened through iradio some tracks which I got in my nas. The strange thing is that those tracks were souding much better on iradio that from my nas (upnp) although the bit rate is higher on my nas.

So I have the feeling that the rendering on the uniti is much better on iradio.

I imagine that iradio stations may enhance the sound but this I don't know.

Appreciate any thought on the topic

Cheers. Sam

I never had opportunity to listen to the same exact track played from those two sources so I cannot contribute an opinion. Theoretically I see several possible explanations to what you report:

a) volume set higher on iradio than on nas, giving the illusion of better sound

b) better source on iRadio, for instance the radio could use high end turntable or tape, or other professional grade equipment that makes a difference

c) difference inside the Uniti on how the signal is handled

d) listener confusion

If you want to get to the bottom of this, you will need to get in touch with your favorite radio and organize a test with them

Yep–pretty likely that MP3 or AAC conversion is adjusting replay gain, subsonic filtering, etc.
