Which Naim CD player?
Posted by: Loki on 16 August 2016
I may well be known here for my analogue ramblings but I am being given a rather large collection of CDs. I do not own a CD player. Which Naim CD player should I go for SH? Top budget £1000. Preferably less. It will necessitate an extra Fraim level too! Longevity and SQ important. LP12 remains the priority first source. Or shouldI just rip the CDs and use static digital media instead?

CB/OLIVE/BLACK BOX
My mistake, it must be CB.
I did Google the images, before posting, a mental slip.

Thanks for pointing that out Gary!
Cosmetically, Sounsfaber CDS 2 matches up better with the OP's CB 32.5, than the Black Box era.
Hence, I'm in agreement with Sounsfaber!
Vintage era:
CDS replaced by CDS2-- Olive 1998
CDS2 replaced by CDS3-- Black 2002
CDS3 replaced by CD555-- 2006

Right you are!
The CD555, just became Naims Reference CD player, which was previously, the CDS 3.
I stand corrected, perhaps I better shut up!
LOL.....

Absolutely correct,, CD555 completed the 500 series. CDS3 was the previous flagship model in the classic series.

So does Popeye..
I also love my CDS2 with olive XPS very very vinyl like.
Just tracked back to the OP's original question, what CDP for max budget £1k? No doubt many of the references are excellent value s/h, and some are very unlikely, eg CD S3 , CD 555, etc., but for £1k, a new CD5si will sound very, very good.
Just bought a new one and has a virtually silent mech, both play and load/unload, unlike a s/h 24 month example I tried, and includes Narcom 5. Sounds exquisite and it's still not run in.
But it's the OP's choice, so listen and choose something you like to listen to.
Just my 2 p's worth,

Quad, that's my point, the OP's preferred source is his LP 12, the OP's budget is $1000 GBP, and from what I hear, the CDS 2 has an analog character about it. The 32.5, even though is not from the Olive era, appears to be a perfet match with the CDS 2.
Furthermore, cosmetically, the Olive/CB Era blends in better than the Blk Box/CB Era.
Just my dollars worth!

Differing tastes..... I happen to think the Olive doesn't mix at all well with CB kit. I do however think both CB or Olive can mix with the latest black boxes.

I think if you mix any of them you upset the gene pool....
Even though my 135's are 88 CB's in olive clothing. Just had to have those HF transformers.![]()
trust me they mix very well.
The main point I think is under £1000 and a serviced xps you are looking around that in its self. So it would be more on the £2000 side all up! Bloody hell that gear is 20 years old and can still demand a night out on the town with Noel Gallagher and Morrissey and have no taxi money for the trip home. Not to mention no sleep for a week.
Anywy OP talked about one more shelf, not 2 or would you stack them
So as DR J (love that name btw) said cd5si will have to do.
as long as he stays away from those new fangled Bluetooth Wi-Fi streamers things.....
Tanks Roberto. I hadn't realised the RRP which is, of course, over budget. But SH, maybe?! Personally I feel streaming is the way to go and ripping the CDs would be my preferred course if I can guarantee best SQ from said CD ripper, hence interest in HDX. However I can computer rip via MacBook Pro, so mhy supllementary question is, if I go THAT route, what's the best way of ensuring highest quality? Will I need an external DAC, for example, to boost results?

One thing is rripping and other replay.
To rip you are OK with your MAC as the hardware piece. For the software part there are many different alternatives, I use XLD which is for free, give a good log, compares your rip with a data base, and provide easy to use features to enter/repair metadata.
When it comes to replay you can choose again to go with your MAC + Audirvana (or other SW) to render the files into a DAC, or go with a server + streamer.
All the CDs you rip into files with the MAC are good for any solution you adopt to replay.
Regarding the format of the files, with MAC/XLD you can go to FLAC or ALAC to save space up to 40-50% using compression algorithms or WAV or AIFF uncompressed, all lossless formats.
I personally go AIFF which is MAC friendly, lossless, uncompressed and good to store metadata.
You have a good number of CD's but I think their are not enough to justify a CDP, unless you plan to have many many more. Your decision to rip is the way to go. With the money you save from the CDP you can enhance or get a better kit to replay your ripped CD's.
Thanks Erich. Yes, unlikely to inherit more CDs.
So if I rip, (and I usually use AIFF) will the MBPro give me the best quality? I've been using CD Spin Doctor for years. A bit buggy but does the job for digitising vinyl!
BtW: 32.5 IS CB and works very well with olive kit. Optimised for vinyl, au naturel!![]()
