QNAP ASSET Question

Posted by: AndyP19 on 20 August 2016

Firstly, thanks for all the advice a month ago whilst I was pondering a set up. Went for the QNAP TS 251, 2Gb RAM with WD 8Tb Red - running Asset. Great Youtube clip had the QNAP out of the box and up and running within 30 minutes. All albums transferred showing a total of 142,056 tracks and 12,565 albums. Wonderful really happy with my decision.

1) Added a WD MyBook 8TB USB and backed-up the above which took about 15 hours which I've set this up on a scheduled basis to run once a week. Is this incremental? Or will it run a full back-up each time? Do I need to check-box anything to back-up incrementally?

2) Being doing a bit of 'digital gardening' weeding out duplicates and splitting out the two CDs on one disc adding album art etc. A full rescan of Asset takes about 2 hours. So doing the aforementioned pruning and weeding is a 'Rescan Folders Detecting Changes' all I need to do or do I need to run a 'Rescan All'?

3) One last thing that is bugging me. QNAP dashboard shows Used 5.39Tb with Available 1.69Tb. Any ideas, given I just have music on this new QNAP where the other 1Tb is? On the QNAP site there is a lot of talk of going into SSH with hidden files using Linux coding interrogations but pressing floor buttons in a lift is sometimes beyond me these days!

Again many thanks for the great assistance.

The backup will be incremental, assuming you're using the QNAP backup app.

True hdd capacity is ~ 7% less than as stated.  It doesn't sound like you're too far off. You don't get 8tb of storage out of an 8tb drive!

Andy.

How are the albums stored. Are the 12,565 albums in one large folder or are they in a number of subfolders.

Backing up will be simplified if you create a folder to which all subsequently downloaded or ripped music will be saved. Setting up the software to only backup this new folder will save a lot of time. In six or twelve months time create another new folder, and so on.

Rescan changes does it for me. I guess time to rescan will depend on number of changes, but hours sounds like a long time for a scan.

QNAP TS-251 shows up as 'accepting' discs of up to 6TB...

Thanks to all.

The folder structure /multimedia then each artist has a folder which contains the album.

Ummmm interesting Adam re max of 6TB  - certainly getting over 7TB out of my 8TB and a lot of talk on the QNAP site (as Bart says) of not getting the full whack.

it's going to take me a while to fill another 1TB so much to listen to.

Thanks again - great advice.

If you're getting over 7TB out of an 8Tb HDD you have no issues. The full capacity is never available.
