Synology Has Minimserver Back In Preloaded Packages
Posted by: Mike-B on 22 August 2016
As above, a new update was loaded (is available) this morning & I see Minimserver is back.
Good to know it's there, just in case I need to play from my backup!
It's been there for ages.
DSM-6 dropped it as a pre-installed package; it might have come back in a following DSM update, but I only noticed it in this mornings update.
I have been looking at the forums and there seems to be a lot of positive comments about Minimserver. Is it better than the standard Synology Media Server? I have been running that since I installed the NAS and it has been working fine, but now wondering if I am missing something.
Thanks
I use Synology Media Server simply because I have all WAV (& DSD) files & it plays these perfectly. I have tried Minimserver & found it plays WAV just as well, its a bit fiddly to install (easy for a 'poota geek) & it does load album art faster than does the Synology. Minimserver is better if you are playing FLAC, ALAC etc., & more so if you are transcoding from those formats to WAV as the Synology transcoding process down-samples to 16-bit & does not play gapless.
Thanks Mike, very helpful.
I have everything in FLAC, I might give it a try to see if I can spot the difference betwen the two formats on my NDX.
