Connection between Naim app and the streamer

Posted by: Kacper on 22 August 2016

Hi there,

since a while after reseting the Naim app at my Ipad or Iphone, the unit (ND5XS) can't be found automaticly, I have to type details (name of the unit and IP address) my self.

What can be the reason of that, it can be the settings of router/modem or the streamer?

regards,

Kacper

Usually network related. You may want to read the sticky topic on auto discovery towards the top of this forum.

Hi,

thanks for your reply, I'm thinking; if the reason might be that this app is running on two devices (Iphone and Ipad).

regards.

You cannot use the app on 2 devices at the same time,   but you can use them ONE at a time.      (I have iPad & Android phone)

Is your wireless router, the two devises & ND5 all set to DHCP  - if not, it is really best to do that.   Then try rebooting the router.

I don't have much knowledge about routers, modems, etc. but I think all my devices are set to DHCP, plus - ND5XS is connected to the network via wire, not wireless.

OK if you don't know about DHCP its most likely its all set to DHCP (default) anyhow.      (DHCP is the automatic management of IP addresses by the router)   With DHCP it makes no difference if ND5 is wire or wireless.     Did you try a router reboot - switch off - wait 5 minutes - restart.

No, but I will try, could be that this router/modem is a troublemaker.

Other issue which I have refers my Ipad (mini one, first version) and Naim app - during scrolling up / down - searching/ checking the music library  the app is not stable. I'm thinking if the old Ipad could be the reason.

What do you mean by 'stable'? I use 1st generation iPad (the really first ever one) with an old version of the Naim app - works a treat.

Don't forget that any other open apps take up processing power....

"not stable" - I mean that sometimes even drop down / switched off - especially when album covers uploading is in progress.  What do you mean "old version of the Naim app" - how many of them are available on app store ?

Posted on: 22 August 2016 by Kacper

Ps: on my Iphone 6 work much better, without of any problems.

Only one is available, but depending on your iOS version, an appropriate one will load up.

Looks like you have network issues with such an instability.

Assuming you have only one Naim app active at a time, then almost certainly your router is not supporting multicast addressing in the way that the Naim app requires. Multicast addresses are a special group of IP addresses on your home network that map to all or a group of devices. Multicast addresses are used for discovery of devices amongst other things.

you might want to ensure a setting  called IGMP snooping or similar, if your router has it, is disabled on your router... I won't go go into details, but by doing this it forces the router to treat multicast addresses in a more simplistic and more compatible way, possibly making your devices discoverable again on your home LAN

And Simon arrives on cue, with a perfect explanation

Simon

the setting which you mentioned are not available on my router/ modem (as far I could check) . It's just the Cisco EPC3928AD (from the local internet supplier)

Problem is a lot of routers have IGMP snooping automatically enabled (no option to enable/disable)   -   mine for example, but it does not have the problems that Kacper has.

Posted on: 22 August 2016 by Kacper

when I have installed the app (last week) first time was no problem- device could find device automatically. Since last Saturday not.

Ok, then one workaround is to get a simple unmanaged switch .. Connect your router, streamer, NAS and UPnP media server if seperate to it. Get a little Apple airport express to act as a wireless access point with its own SSID for the Naim app and also plug that into the switch. Discovery will then almost certainly work....

There are severeal different versions of IGMP and they don't always operate so well with each other which is why many routers allow internal snooping to be disabled to allow different devices to talk.. If the router can't do this as you it can't and you can't swap it out  then try my steps above.  You may find other home network discovery apps used by YouTube, Sonos, Netflix, Home automation etc also have reliability issues if your router is not handling multicast in a usable way.

yes if intermittent almost certainly sounds like snooping issues.

Ok, looked through manual.. Absolutely silent on multicast... not helpful. However a few things to check.. Have you enabled UPnP, and also the UPnP DLNA media server and see what happens. If you set the routers own DLNA media server up then I kind of expect the streamer and the media server on the router to be discoverable on the Naim app... and I trust you are using iOS? Android has had discovery issues in the past.. But I thought now resolved

Yes, I'm using iOS, the UPnP is enabled, media server I cant enable it stays disable.

Try downloading and installing Minimserver - it's free, but if you decide to keep it, please make a donation.

Posted on: 22 August 2016 by Kacper

If I decide, I will - promise. During the Minimserver is in use, the other one (from Synology) should be switched off?; otherwise both will be visible on the Naim app; am I right?

Both can be active at the same time and will be visible via the Naim app's top level screen.

I would first focus on the network discovery issue,  I don't think the different media server will fix it.    (I use Synology's Media Server & its rock solid)

Posted on: 23 August 2016 by Huge

I would second Mike's advice.
The Synology Media Server is rock solid, simple and very easy to configure.
MinimServer has quite a few more capabilities but corresponding more complex configuration.
Keep it simple 'til you have your network issues sorted.

When I had network issues Simon also helped me sort them - router swap, and change to config on second router (disable IGMP snooping [I'd already enabled DLNA]).

Thanks guys for helping me out, probably I need to buy external router. The modem which I have has many bad feedbacks also from the local Naim dealer- they say it's a famous with troubles.

By the way, is any one who knows how to disable or enable (temporarily without of deleting) application (MinimServer) on Synology?

In the package center where you install the packages, look for the minimserver package and click it. In the details page you have (AFAIR) a select box below the package icon. There you can choose "uninstall" or just "stop" the package. If it is stopped you can "run" it again then by another entry that replaces the "stop" entry.

I am not sitting at my PC and not seeing the Synology Interface currently, so the wordings might be not exactly what I write.
