Connection between Naim app and the streamer

Posted by: Kacper on 22 August 2016

Hi there,

since a while after reseting the Naim app at my Ipad or Iphone, the unit (ND5XS) can't be found automaticly, I have to type details (name of the unit and IP address) my self.

What can be the reason of that, it can be the settings of router/modem or the streamer?

regards,

Kacper

Assuming you have only one Naim app active at a time, then almost certainly your router is not supporting multicast addressing in the way that the Naim app requires. Multicast addresses are a special group of IP addresses on your home network that map to all or a group of devices. Multicast addresses are used for discovery of devices amongst other things.

you might want to ensure a setting  called IGMP snooping or similar, if your router has it, is disabled on your router... I won't go go into details, but by doing this it forces the router to treat multicast addresses in a more simplistic and more compatible way, possibly making your devices discoverable again on your home LAN

the setting which you mentioned are not available on my router/ modem (as far I could check) . It's just the Cisco EPC3928AD (from the local internet supplier)

Apparently the settings are "hidden" on my router.  I Googled some info and found some 'hidden' pages on my router setup.  My system has been working really well, but I do seem to have IGMP Proxy "enabled."

Hi Bart, this screen ironically is probably the only one not really relevant - this is an IGMP Proxy for joining groups between your home network and the internet.

However the multicast filtering screens look more interesting - we don't want any filtering of multicast on ports which the Naim, NAS/UPnP media server and Naim app reside on. Multicast filtering can be achieved by IGMP Snooping. Snooping and Proxying are two very different things

By the way, is any one who knows how to disable or enable (temporarily without of deleting) application (MinimServer) on Synology?

In the package center where you install the packages, look for the minimserver package and click it. In the details page you have (AFAIR) a select box below the package icon. There you can choose "uninstall" or just "stop" the package. If it is stopped you can "run" it again then by another entry that replaces the "stop" entry.

I am not sitting at my PC and not seeing the Synology Interface currently, so the wordings might be not exactly what I write.

thanks for an advice, found it.

Probably I will buy an external router and the modem will be switched to the "bridge mode".

any advices, which one would the best? I don't want to buy something really expensive or superb, just good enough for configuration: NAS, streamer, Ipad (Naim app)

Apple Airport Express or Extreme.

Very stable and since you already have other Apple devices it will work well for you.

Thanks Adam! Next week I will check local mediamarkt shop.

The best thing is to order directly from Apple and have it delivered - you wil get the same price.  Apple resellers are not allowed to discount.
But if you don't like it for whatever reason you can just return it within 14 days of the delivery - easy and painless.

Airport Extreme is not exactly cheap (around EUR 250 or so) but very, very good.
I use two versions at home: Apple Time Capsule (Extreme + hard drive for backups) and Extreme as a network extension.

Easy to configure and they've never let me down. More importantly they do exactly the right things for a home network and NAIM streamers work with them very well.

I'm sure you will get other good recommendations from members on this thread. This way you will have a good overview of reliable routers that are proven to work.
