naim nac 102 v naim nac 112x
Posted by: Garry on 23 August 2016
Just wondering which is a better amp...? The Naim nac 112x or the older nac102 without a service...I will be using it with a nap 150x ...Would mixing old with new them be a problem...?? Would I need a seprate power supply for the 102 ' or can it be powered from the nap150x same as the 112x..
Would like a newer 202 like most other people else , after auditionoing one in Preston ' but funds dont allow at the moment..
Would the 102 be more like the 202 or is it a different amimal...Oh how much is it to send an amp to Naim these days for a general service ' if I get a 102 at a good price..??
Any comments appreciated..
Either 102 or 112x should be serviced as 150x .Well ,if power amp has never been I'd say It'd benefit the most of all.
102 is a much better preamp than 112 is.
But I would not bother 102 if you' ve 200 on mind ,neither serviced 102 /serviced150.
In your shoes I'd go 122x or maybe, much better a more recent supernait ,just demo.
Supernait would do everything indeed.
But, what sources needs to be connected? If you only plan to stream, why not connect a Dac V1 (+ chromecast / apple tv / airport express) directly to the 150x?
Would be brilliant source ...
If money is tight wait and save. Naim amps sound best in matched pairs ie 202/200 - don't get one if you can't afford the other. A 122 is a noticeable step up from the 112 and may be a better fit for your budget. A used nait xs might also do the trick.
102/180 Is a nice match for maybe slightly more than 112/150. It's better too IMO. And if you use a Turntable the 102 should have MM or MC cards which will be an advantage. I had both combinations, enjoyed both but if I had to settle for one it would be the former.
I would get the 102, then add a Hicap and a 250.

Worked for me into SBLs
......
...........subsequently followed by a second 250, SNAXO & SCap.
If you want music then stick with the olives or the CBs. The black boxes don't do it until you dig deep into your pockets.

I disagree. I've listened to many, many Naim systems of all types over the years and I've had huge fun listening to Naim entry level, 5 series kit, and lower reaches of the Reference range. Not as much hifi maybe as the bigger kit, but working within their limits, still thrilling, engrossing, and musically satisfying. Particular highlights were the CD5x, NAC122x, FC2x, and NAP150x driving a range of speakers from Neat and Naim, and the CD5i, Nait5i and a pair of Arivas, and many memorable systems fronted by a CDX2, and a NAC202/NAP200, or Supernait on amp duties. All of these "did it", and then some...
Thanks for all the replies..
I had the 150x serviced when I got it by Naim....Although happy with the nac 112x ..Think I will listen to the 122x and try to get a newish one 'see how it compares with the 112x...Maybe Tom Tom or some other authorised Naim dealer will have one in to demonstrate...
Tempting to get new nac 202..Just not sure about the volume control..It seems they are more prone to dirt being analogue and not the newer resistor type..Seems to be the first thing to go on even good amplifiers.
They talk on the forums of the resistor type being less pure in its sound..?? ' although I listen to Pink Floyd at pretty high levels on 112x and it brings a smile to my face in a way that no other audio system ever has....
Love my Rega ELA MK1 's ' Naim amplifiers just seem to open up the bass and organize things in a very believable way...I kind of have a sound that I like and dont want to go backward 'if you get my meaning..
I am using nac a4 solder terminated with decent plugs ' would a simple change to nac a5 give any improvements....I believe the older wire was designed around the older amps ??? Really not sure on this one..
As always thanks to everyone ...
Garry, NACA5 with some well soldered Naim speaker plugs onboard sounds like a great place to start. Go for an optimum length, somewhere greater than 5m in my opinion.
If Tom Tom is your dealer then I'm sure James can show you some options. How are your source(s)?
My source is a computer with a meridian explorer DAC.. Also my tv..
Will be getting an N DAC when funds allow to take care of the digital stuff..
I stream mainly...
Hi Garry,
Try the 122X/150X combo, it was the basic combo a couple of years ago but for me it was a surprise... the best sound on my room in that category of prices, remenber that is in the lowest rank of the naim sistems so don´t wait to have a state of the art in your room.
Like always when you got something that satisfies, we always wondering what to upgrade to get it better, and from some tips fro this forum I will also try the NAC a5 cable with 6m ( until nom talk 3.1 ) as it looks is mandatory.
I like the new Naim equipments, they are great, exellent sound, you get convinced by the quality and the improvements very easy, the only problem for me, is that sometimes, I get to much info ( to much detail, to much clearness, to much on your face, and so on ) that on long auditions days it tends to tired me faster.
Just to have an idea I will also try the olive series to see if I can have what I want in terms of sound.
I´ll try to upgrade mine 122X/150X, but I don´t know if I will sell it .... just in case.....
So try the 122x if you can, and see if it is ok for you, it was made for the 150X and is not so expensive in second hand.

112 + 150 was my first pairing and my first proper amp. It was more money than i initially wanted to part with but sounded much better than the other amps on demo to me. The game changer was adding the FC during the demo - and then i was hooked! ![]()

Cheers Barranta..I am going to try the 122x..Because I do like the Naim sound..The bug has bitten me again after years away from hi fi..OOPS that is swearing on here..Ha ha...I have more time on my hands to listen to music..Also it is so easy now with all the streaming options..Suits my minamilist mind...A chair ' small coffee table and a stack of Black boxes at the other end of the room..Still system building ' fun fun fun...
cheers for all the comments '
As you have a computer as source, how about a DAC-V1? Then there would be no need for the nDac.

Hearsay. No need to sweat the small stuff, imo.
