Connecting an NDX and NAS to Internet?

Posted by: John Toon on 23 August 2016

Sorry and numpty question here, perhaps already answered and please feel free to redirect me if already answered.

Situation is I have bought a QNAP HS-251+ as a NAS for my NDX. Problem is the NDX only has one network connector so how does one connect the NAS to the NDX in this case? I presumably want internet connected to the NDX at all times, and certainly do not want to swap out the Internet for NAS every time I want to access the NAS. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks and Numpty out.

Hi John, you need a switch like a Netgear at about £20 connect hub/router to your switch then NAS and NDX to the switch.

I don't know the QNAP model you own but my set-up is:

QNAP453 PRO ~ NDX (etc.) and these are connected via the (home) router.  Initially both devices were connected directly to the Virgin router but I learnt (advice from this forum) that it's better to have a switch so now the NDX and NAS are both connected via the switch (Netgear) which is plugged directly into the router.  Prior to this change the NDX suffered odd interruptions (which i blame on router traffic) but via the switch this does not seem to be a problem (fingers continually crossed!)

So: NDX ~ Netgear switch ~ NAS with the switch plugged directly into the Virgin router.

Hope this helps.

If your router is any good, there's every chance that your NAS and streamer will work fine connected to it. Worth a try if you can, then if you have problems, a separate switch like the Netgear GS105 would be worth a try. Simply turn it on, and connect your router, NAS and streamer into any three ports, and you're done.

or even more basic connect both to the LAN switch ports on the back of the router. Most consumer routers have four switch ports built in, If its a modern router the chances are you should be fine with this as they will use regular switching chipsets as used in standalone devices - if you have issues with discovery then do as Pcd suggests.

Thanks to all for your informative advice. I will try connecting both to the router and also try the Netgear option. Can't tell you all how much I appreciate such help. Thanks again.

I still don't get why Naim don't put some simple Network guidelines on the site as a get you started guide.

Linn manage it.
