Qnap Asset: Help!

Posted by: Arnaud on 23 August 2016

Hi everyone,

I tried to install both a Qnap 251+ and Asset to my system (SN2 + NDX) last sunday and I thought I succeeded.

BUT: on my Naim iPhone App, 2 servers appear: "QNAP-HS-251 NAS" and "Asset UPnP". The few CDs I've ripped only appear in the first server, but not in "Asset". I'm really not a geek, so I guess I've installed something the wrong way.

I remember I was offered a choice of installing Asset either on my MacBook or directly on the QNAP and I chose the latter. Could the mistake come from there?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Regards,

Arnaud

I use Asset on a Qnap and it works fine - have you set up Asset to scan your music library?

It's correct to put Asset on the Qnap. From memory, you need to tell Asset which directory on the Nas to look at i.e. The place where you put your music. This is probably what you need to do.

Arnaud,

Did you download a qpkg file to your computer/ MacBook and use the QNAP's App Centre to install the qpkg file?

Once you have done this, you need to click on the Asset app on your QNAP to configure it i.e point it to the folders which hold your audio files (presumably within the multimedia directory) and also configure  the browsing tree I.e. the artist, album etc. views you want to appear in the naim app. I'm assuming that all your files are tagged properly as Asset uses tags to display the file data.

QNAP has its own DLNA Media Server which I've disabled which you can find in the Applications Section of the QNAP's Control Panel and which is what I suspect is showing up as the second server.

Thank you for your inputs.

Well, to be honest, I can't find Asset on my MacBook anymore.

On the left side of my macbook panel, in the "shared" are two "QNAP-HS 251" devices, one of them being called "QNAP HS 251 AFP, both of which have the following files:

"Download, home, homes, Multimedia, Public, Recordings and Web" (sorry, I'm also struggling to insert a screenshot: I'm not a geek, I told you earlier ;

When I open one of those, I only find an @Recycle file, except in "Multimedia", in which I've also put my Music.

But no trace of "Asset".

I'm a bit lost I'm afraid!"

Arnaud, you should have a program on your MacBook called QFinder Pro which will open a link to your QNAP NAS and allow you to sign in as admin to its web page. I think the default login and password are both "admin" or "administrator".

From there you should be able to see whether Asset is installed as an App.

I think the "shared" panel you refer to shows the different network drives/locations you can access from your MacBook. The Multimedia folder is a default directory on your QNAP as are the recycle folders (they're there to prevent you accidentally deleting files from your NAS).

It seems my problem has been fixed. I'll check more deeply tomorrow (it's getting late!).

But what a marvelous forum!

Thank you all for your help!

Hi

Firstly, what a great forum this is for help and advice, without this I’m sure I would have been trawling the internet on multiple sites getting conflicting advice, so thanks to all!

Just setting up my UnitiQute2, I’m new to Naim streaming but have had Sonos for years, all my CD’s (2000+) are ripped to Flac using XLD as I’m a Mac user and are stored on a QNAP TS221 NAS and I’m using Asset as the server software.

Asset has scanned my music folders and at first glance all looks OK, other than my “Various” albums. I use “Various” rather than “Various Artists” and it only picks up 11 albums and there are probably a hundred or more. They are all present in the Sonos system and they were also all picked up by the DNLA music server software which came installed on the QNAP, I’ve now disabled this (thanks SJBABBEY) as I didn’t like the two servers being present on the Naim app.

So I rescanned the complete library with Asset and under “Various” I then had 17 Lou Reed albums!!

I’ve cleared the image cache and reset the naim app and it made no difference. So I read in this topic that it may help to restart the NAS which I did and I’m back to the 11 “Various” albums and Lou is back where he should be.

So I don’t quite know where to go from here, I’ve compared the tagging of albums that are included in the 11 with others that are not and can see no difference between them.

Incidentally is it correct to reset the Naim app, is that what is meant by “clearing the upnp cache”?

Oh and all my 7 Sonos zones are listed on the UPnP screen is that “normal”?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Chris, looks like you, Mitch (Musicmad) from my post last week and myself are all in the same boat or boot! in that a reboot of the server is the only thing that will get everything back in order. Really weird as to why QNAP/Asset jumbles everything up after a rescan all. I get a the same as you under “Various” I then had 17 Lou Reed albums!! but different artist combinations.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here?

I think you are correct in that resetting the Naim app, clears the upnp cache.

It looks more like a taging problem

Asset is really a beast. I had some problems and posted on them forum 2 times, 2 times quick and efficient.

Check whether any of the offending albums has a "compilation" tag. If it has and is set to "1" then Asset will interpret it as being a various artists album. If this is the cause of your issue you can just delete the compilation tag and rescan.

Thanks but definitely not a tagging issue I've been meticulous and re-checked that the tags are all as they should be - something more is going on here - which is beyond my skills to fathom out

Posted on: 05 September 2016 by sjbabbey

Hi Andy,

I'm sure you've rechecked your tagging in which case I can only suggest you post your issue on the dBpoweramp/Asset UPnP forum.

One last thing you might look at is the artist/album artist tagging. I believe that the naim app picks up the album artist by default for the artist view. However there seem to be several different ID3 tags for artist i.e. "ARTIST", "ALBUM ARTIST" and "ALBUMARTIST" as well as "PERFORMER". It might be worthwhile having another look at the tags on your problem albums to check whether they have any differences in the tag names.

Hi Andy

Yes it's all beyond me at the moment, of the 11 "Various" that do appear under that heading some have the compilation box ticked in XLD and some don't so there doesn't seem to be a pattern there?

SJ, What do you mean "set to 1" in the compilation tagging as far as I can see XLD just allows you to tick or untick the compilation box? On the Naim app I also have "Various Artists" which shows one album that I tagged as "Various". If there is a problem with my tagging I can't see it and wht would the DNLA server on the QNAP as well as the Sonos pick up all the albums correctly...odd?

Hi Chris,

I believe that the compilation tag is from ITunes and, if present in the album's metadata, it will show up in mp3tag (the tagging software I use) as a "1" if the album is a compilation/various artists album. Asset uses this tag to identify the album as a compilation and will default the album artist tag to various artists.

Posted on: 05 September 2016 by ChrisG

OK, understood thanks SJ, I don't use iTunes so that shouldn't be my problem.

As a matter of interest using XLD to rip CD's I have the option of changing the metadata which I do where I deem necessary but If when ripped I then want to change something, I make the changes in XLD and then have to "Transcode" to keep the changes. Then of course I have to replace the existing ripped album with the now corrected "Transcoded" album. With mp3tag can I just make the changes to metadata and not have to replace the entire album?

Does that make any sense??

With mp3tag there is no need to transcode or convert the format of your flac files after amending the tags.

It makes sense, but sounds most bizarre. Transcoding is used to convert one format to another when the file is played, rather than anything permanent. Certainly when using dbpoweramp you can just change the metadata at any point, directly on the nas.

Thanks SJ, will give mp3tag a go!

HH

I may not be using XLD in the best way, but the only way I can get any changes to remain is to "Transcode", I'm sure that there are people on here who are more familiar with XLD than I am....anyone?

+1 mp3tag which is excellent, as is Tagscanner

I posted the issue to the dbpoweramps Asset Upnp Forum and that nice Mr Spoon suggested loading up Release 5 which is in beta test.

You can find R5 in the test section of the dbpoweramps Forum.

So far so good seems to have solved a number of the issues I have been experiencing. Thanks for all the good guidance.
