iPad Update

Posted by: Mike-B on 25 August 2016

In case you don't read the news or attend to keeping your stuff updated ................  Apple has made available today (this evening EU time) iOS 9.3.5,  a security update for iPads Phones & Pods against a sneaky spyware.

According to the press " .........  the iOS 9.3.5 upgrade plugs three holes that, according to researchers, are being used right now by the Pegasus surveillance kit – a powerful commercial malware package sold to governments for snooping on dissidents and journalists........ "

Since most Apple IOS updates turn out to have major bugs that need patching, and it's only  about two weeks since the last update so there probably won't have been much beta testing, unless you are a journalist or a dissident you might want to wait a week or so to see whether this update works OK!

i must admit if I was a dissident or sensitive journalist - I am not sure I would use an iPad or iPhone - or any 'smart' device for that matter.....

Yes good point! The guy who found the bug was interviewed on the Today programme this morning and apparently to get infected, you had to click on something sent to you in a text message.  So I suspect not too many Naim forum members need to be worried about this.

My immediate reaction was that we only had an update a week or so ago, whats going on,  so searched & found the press reports.   And as its most unusual to find anything on iOS running updates & it had a twist & its the long weekend coming up,  so what the hell lets see what the learned intellectuals (& dissidents) on the forum say about it.

And BTW  the next "big" release is iOS-10 & the release date is 30-Sept according to Barbra Streisand (whoever she is)

Well I guess - some might have thought it was only Microsoft that was mainly liable to viruses and malware and by some sort of 'magic' Apple was immune - but this story and other recent ones perhaps goes to show that this issue at least equally applies to Apple and perhaps even more so to Apple given its more prevalent use in mobile devices compared to Microsoft (currently)

Downloaded it last night and then found all my hi-res files wouldn't play via my NDS until I restarted everything. Spooky!

Further to all things iOS,  & hoping Naim have done whatever is needed to check the next iOS update does not have issues as did the Android-7 "Nougat" ..........

iOS-10 looks like a lot of changes,  according to the press it will be launched mid Sept & a lot bets are on 14 Sept  (assuming they say if the iPhone 7 gets launched at the 7 Sept press conference & released to market 16 Sept preloaded with iOS-10 & they keep to the usual pattern of hardware and software release dates)
