streaming dunce seeks help w/ microRendu, Roon

Posted by: joe9407 on 28 August 2016

having heard good things about microRendu and Roon, i'm thinking of ditching my Sonos Connect. that said, i'm confused about what hardware i'd need to get up and running.

i just ordered a Synology DS216j NAS, thinking that i could use it to host Roon along with CD rips, but apparently it lacks the needed computing power (per another thread on here).

i have a MacBook Air that i could use to host Roon, but i wouldn't want to have to use a wired connection between my laptop and the microRendu (or whatever).

what else would i need to get? am i making this too complicated? (it seems pretty complicated.)

i'd mainly be streaming Internet radio and Tidal.

Joe,

I think that the mR can host the Roon 'client' itself - I haven't done this myself but there is a 'RoonReady' app.

You need:

>a music source, i.e. Roon &/or NAS with music files &/or Quboz / Tidal, etc;
>Networking solution between your music source & the mR;
>Physical network connection into the mR;
>USB solution to handle the mR USB output, e.g. USB DAC.

....then the rest of your HiFi.

muchas gracias, Mr. Underhill!

i have a Chord 2Qute, so am sorted for a USB DAC. (taking advantage of the Qute's USB connection is another reason i'm thinking of doing this.)

so, basically, would the following connection chain work for Roon: router to NAS to microRendu to DAC? it would be great if the mR could host Roon...

The microRendu cannot host Roon. Ideally Roon will need a PC or Mac, although some have got it working on Synology NAS (see Roon forum)

So you will need Roon running on your Mac, your music can be on the Mac or the NAS. Once microrendu is on the same network via Ethernet connection it can be setup to see Roon and then  connected by USB to your chord DAC.

The sonore website has a good explanation of what the mR can do. Roon is sublime.

It might be best for you to get a Roon trial and connect your MacBook to the DAC just to make sure it is what you want before buying the mR

Thx Sloop.

Hi Joe,

Sloop is correct you need to run RoonServer, which can be on a PC, MAC or NAS. In your case sounds like it would have to be your MAC.

The mR RoonReady client then connects to RoonServer.

Sorry to mis-direct you.

Joe,

Thought I would go and see if I could load up the packages: requires a Synology with an Intel 64 bit processor, and minimum 2GB ram. My 1812+ is Intel, and I am running 3GB RAM, but it is a 32 bit arch that can, I believe, run 64 bit instructions ....so I think this not going to run.

I am tempted as I have read that it does have an edge in sound quality, but this is probably for the best as I object to the ongoing charges.

Be interested to read how you get along and what your think.

an update: i ordered the microRendu this morning --in a rush of blood to the head-- but my wife said "no mas" on getting a Mac Mini or any other hardware to serve Roon. oh, well.

so: i'm going to set the MR for Squeezelite and stream using Logitech Media Server, which should work with my Synology NAS.

does that sound about right?

i'll look into Roon once i get permission to buy more shit.

That's what I am listening to at the moment, and works very well!

You have got me looking more at Roon, and may have a play in due course.

What PSU are you going to use with the mR?

hi Mr. Underhill -- i got the cheapest option, the iFi, but if i like the mR i'm going to get a Teddy Pardo PSU for it.

i noticed this morning that Small Green Computer has a "sonicTransporter" that will host Roon and i almost pulled the trigger on it, until i learned that Roon does not currently support TuneIn radio, which is a necessity for me. (i'm more or less completely addicted to FIP Paris.) Roon says that they're working to incorporate a TuneIn module -- so i think i'll just use the Logitech server for now, and make the switch once Roon seamlessly incorporates Internet radio.

Hi Joe,

I think you will be delighted with the microRendu, as for me it's working brilliantly with the 2Qute and sounds fantastic. I also pondered the TP PSU but on doing some digging the Paul Hynes SR3 appears to be a better, albeit a little more expensive option so I've ordered one. A member on the CA Forum has one with the microRendu and reports a very significant leap in SQ.

As for the sonicTransporter, I recently made the switch from an iMac to the i7 version and it's proven to be a good move from a SQ point of view. Operationally it's lightening fast with Roon and works perfectly.

The Roon implementation of internet radio is not yet where it should be but perfectly workable. You just have to manually add the URL's and I'm listening to FIP as I type.

Hi Joe,

I have mainly used Kazoo/Minimserver & LMS, it is that latter I am currently using - the files sitting on my Synology NAS ....plus both work with Qobuz, the sound quality of which through the mR is excellent, recording allowing.

I am still using the IFI while I wait, eternally, for the Sbooster. I don't think in any way that you will be disappointed, and LMS has a reasonable interface.

It would be good to do a review of the various PSUs with the mR. I suspect that it might be similar to the different modes, slight variations. I too have looked at  the sonicTransporter. I would probably be more tempted by Roon if it interfaced with Quboz, like you I will wait for a while. The general feedback has been that Roon offers the best SQ, but I have read a couple of posts denigrating it.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts and impressions in due course.
