250DR smile and LP12 grimace

Posted by: Allan Milne on 30 August 2016

As some of you know from other posts, I have been home demoing a 250DR.

Well today it left me to be replaced by a spanking new one

... magnificent from first turn on but I also got the dealer to replace the rollers on the B&W 803D3's with its spikes at last. So that would have helped too.

All smiles playing tunes from my Unitiserv; tight bass, great detail and soundstage , etc etc etc

So then it was time to try it with vinyl on the LP12

... oh dear, it sounds all wrong, must be a bad pressing since I've never played this disc before;

... disaster - its wrong on my other vinyl too

... what to do, who to ask ...

... some of you know I'm blind so I had to wait on the chief executive coming home from ladies who lunch and asked her to look at the cartridge needle

... "yes the needle is ok, just bending out a little - is that a problem?"

... and then the penny dropped, after last playing a disc I had knocked into the Fraim and the arm had come off its catch but other things had distracted me and I hadn't checked it out proper!

Well that is the end of the Klyde and a Krystal is now on order, hoping the home insurance will cover it, seems favourable.

At least I'm able to keep smiling with the noise coming out of the UnitiServ through the new 250DR - did I say it was magnificent?

so the moral of the story is ... hifi just keeps giving and taking and giving and taking and ...

Allan - memo to self - speak to CEO and get agreement / negotiate a wall-shelf?

Enjoy Allan - Glad you got one as quickly as I did.

Excellent service from 'The man from Montrose'.

Sorry to hear about the demise of your Klyde, but be assured that the Krystal is a very capable cartridge and you'll probably find it more engaging than the Klyde too.

Please keep us posted on how your Krystal sounds from new and how it progresses. My DV 20X2 isn't bent but it might be time to move on.

- I had thought of that but trouble is I have the fraim at an angle across a room corner and lovely it looks too.
- so a wall mount wouldn't work unless I move the fraim parallel to one of the walls.

Grame - indeed, and got an email quote for the insurance from him within half an hour.

Clive - the Krystal has had excellent feedback so I live in hope.

Cyclo - will do but I'm pretty useless at comparing sound from memory unless its a wow moment but I'll do my best.

Allan, the Krystal is a stunning cartridge. Be prepared to hear all your vinyl like it's the first time.

I feel your pain.  I have just received back my new Apheta 2 after pranging it somehow or other several weeks ago.  My insurance company covered the cost of a replacement, it couldn't be rebuilt, but it took a bit of faffing around to get there.  Hope you get sorted soon and enjoy your new cartidge.

Prepared to be delighted with the Krystal - it's unbelievably good for the price. I heard it demoed in a Klimax level LP12 and it gave the Kandid a good run for it's money; very impressive considering the price differential.
