SuperUniti old and new models

Posted by: Pompitous on 02 September 2016

Hi there,

Am I right in thinking that the older SuperUniti cannot be upgraded to Bluetooth connectivity, or to match the spec of the new model generally? And is there an easy visual way of checking which model is which? Serial number for instance?

Thanks for any advice.

You are right that it cannot have Bluetooth added, but apart from that there is no difference.

The Bluetooth version has two aerial connections on the back.

Thanks for that! So will my iOS devices connect wirelessly to the pre-BT model via my home wifi network? Apologies for my entry-level understanding here...

If the SuperUniti is connected to your home network your iPad or iPhone will be able to connect to it with the Naim app.

Sorry, I don't understand. You can control the SU with the Naim app via the network, but if you want to play music that is on an iPhone you will need to connect with a wire. Bluetooth is not great quality though and for serious music you will want to have your music on a networked nas.

Yes sorry I meant connecting for easily shooting audio over from my iPhone - I'm a music professional and I'm often getting emailed mp3s to listen to, so quality in those cases doesn't matter.

I'm looking at an early model SU for sale secondhand - the price saving is quite considerable over the used later models I've seen for sale, so if the Bluetooth capability is the only difference in the spec then it's probably not worth bothering with.

Music-wise on the phone I'm mainly on Spotify, but as far as I know that'll be available on the early model too so again, no problem. For a thousand pound saving I'm sure I can manage to reach for a headphone wire! For serious music listening, until I've ripped my CD collection to a drive, I'll be on CDs, internet radio and Spotify.

Is there anyway of accessing the equivalent spec details on the Naim website for the pre-BT SU?

Thanks.

You may be able to use an Airport Express via an optical input to provide this connectivity. I used to use this route to stream Spotify before it was embedded natively.

I used to have the original version SU. So long as the one you buy has the latest firmware - an upgrade you can do yourself - it will be exactly the same as the current version, other than not having Bluetooth. As you say, it's very easy to connect the iPhone with a USB lead.

Nice one, thank you.

I find I can stream directly from my android phone to Naim streamers using Bubble. Just select "renderer" and the phone (local renderer) and all the Naim streamers on the network are listed. Click a Naim box, play a file from the phone. Hey presto!

I've configured my network to allow AirPlay to my Uniti and 272.  You need LMS (Logitech / Squeezebox server) and then add the UPnP bridge and Shairport plugins.

its not entirely simple but if you like to play around a bit...
