UnitiQute 2 and NAS

Posted by: fm1971 on 08 September 2016

HI,

I'm new to this so my question was prob answered before. Which NAS would you recommend for the UQ2?

I'm looking at the Synology DS216J, QNAP TTS228 or WD MyCloud Mirror. I'd be grateful to anyone who's used any of them devices. Thanks!

Synology or QNAP are commonly used and well regarded by the forum members.
Asset, Minimserver are the most often used UPnP server softwares.

I cannot find the QNAP NAS you've mentioned - QNAP TTS22.
What is it?

Thanks a lot Adam, very quick! Now for the set up: am I right in saying I need a router between the NAS and the UQ2? Can I set up a second network in my house, i.e. one router gets the broadband signal to enable wifi to iPad and iPhones, and the second is dedicated to my music library streaming. Thanks for input and help.

Sorry its the TS 228, saw a youtube on it. Maybe discontinued?

The basic network set up is like this (picture courtesy of Mike-B):

Essentially you connect a router (presumably from your Internet Service Provider) to a small unmanaged switch. All network components are then connected to a switch via LAN cables (NAS, UnitiQute2, etc, etc).

For improved stability you can also try a slightly 'over the top' setup (also commonly used by forum members): take your router and an Apple Airport Extreme and link them by a LAN cable. Then plug your switch into Airport Extreme.
The benefit of this solution is stability and functionality (ease of set up).

To answer you other quesiton: your WiFi and LAN networks must be the same, for iPad to control your UnitiQute2.

Possibly - not listed as a current QNAP product.

For home use I'd recommend SilentNAS range - HS-251. When choosing hard-drives for it make sure they are specifically designed to work in a NAS.

I'll go for a pair WD Red 3 TB. Thanks again for insight. Can't to get set up and enjoy my music, getting UQ2 on sat!

What UPnP software do you plan to use?

Posted on: 08 September 2016 by fm1971

I haven't used any yet so I'll try your suggestion: Asset or Minimserver. Are those good for Mac, can any be ran via iOS? thx

UPnP software resides on your NAS. NAS has it's own operating system. Minimserver is free to download, but if you like it and intend to keep it, it's good to make a donation to the developer. I have a Minimserver runnign on my NAS as a backup for UnitiServe.

To control a Naim streamer and your music collection on a NAS, the easiest and the best way is to download NAIM's own app, called NAIM app. It's available both for iOS and Android.

The NAIM app will enable you to: select inputs on your UnitiQute2, mute it, select music from your NAS etc.
The app will access any UPnP server running on your network.

MyCloud Mirror should be fine too. I've used a MyBookLive since I started streaming. It works great with 2x UnitiQutes and a SuperUniti here.

I have a Qnap TS253A, which is very good. You can back it up by connecting a USB drive to a socket on the front and pressing a little button, which makes it very easy. You wouldn't normally have the nas in the same room as the stereo, so the fact that it makes the odd noise shouldn't matter.

Good point from HH - keep your NAS as far away from the music system as possible. Ideally on a different mains circuit.

Our nas is actually only a metre from the stereo, but it's in the dining room. When the builders were in we drilled a hole through the wall big enough to take an AudioQuest cable.

Currently listening to Allen Toussaint 'SongBook' in 24/96 on MacBook through headphones, beauty!

I'm planning to have NAS is room next door. Prob the QNAP TS-251.Any views? Or Synology DS215J. Any views?

I'd get the qnap, so you can run Asset easily. Keep life simple. See if it's got the backup button though - if not look at the 253A.

Good choice for hdd's!

I have a WD Mybook World which has so far been fine.

However....

- It is not THAT old but it is no longer supported by WD (updates no longer available) - I'm not sure if others remove support so soon

- the music server is Twonky and you can't change it (without some real faffing) - I would like to install Asset but even if I could, I suspect it would be a real pain. Twonky works but again the version I have is out of date and I don't really like it

- I suspect that once the hard drive dies, that is it.  I would suggest for future proofing, a Qnap or Synology, the former of which I have been considering.

There is a good website that does nas comparisons and reviews (search nas compares)

Hope that helps
