NAC 82 / upgrades +which HiCap
Posted by: Alex Horky on 09 September 2016
Hi together,
I bought a NAC 82, built in 2000!
Will use it with a newer black NAPSC,
Could i also use 2 newer HiCap models for the NAC 82?
And or does an Olive Supercap sounds better than with HiCap's?
Because its one of the latest models, is there an upgrade which makes sense available?
Thanks
Alex
Yes, you can use later style Hicaps on the NAC82 - even DR versions. Just be sure that you use identical Hicaps. Supercap is appreciably better than a pair of Hicaps though.
Best upgrade to your NAC82 is a service.
Using two hicaps on an 82 is basically a waste of time, with virtually nothing added by the second one. As Richard says, an Olive Supercap is the way to go. And they match visually too.
On recently-serviced NAC 82 IMHO (your mileage may vary, always try to dem first):
Supercap 2 DR (four rails) > 2 x Hicap 2 DR (four rails) > recently-serviced Olive Supercap (four rails);
Hicap 2 DR (two rails) > recently-serviced Olive Supercap (two rails) > Hicap 2 (two rails)
The DR stuff is just that much better, with a similar lowering of noise floor as that provided, in general, by the larger chassis separation of the Supercap.
Dear Daviddever.
Just for clearing Things up; do you mean that 2x hicap-dr is better than serviced olive supercap on the 82? I Wonder because I have an old but excellent serviced dualrailed Nac 12, which I use With a hicap-DR. I have been playing with the idea of getting olive supercap instead of my hicap-dr. Maybe a olive supercap would be a backwards step, then?

At the start of the year I had a CB HC powering my 1998 82. At roughly the same time I moved to HCDR and had the 82 rebuilt. I did briefly compare the CBHC to the HCDR. Some observations:
- The CBHC had a warmer, fatter, slower effect on the 82. Almost tube like. Very easy to listen to and certainly was the heart of a nice system
- The HCDR changed the aforementioned qualities to be cleaner, crisper, quieter, faster, better transients, etc.
For me the HCDR was a very worthwhile upgrade as David says above.
The 82 rebuild service made everything better. I noticed the biggest change in the interplay or transparency between the musicians. Hard to describe, some might call it 'grip' on the music, but it has the overall effect of making the music palpably more alive - if that makes any sense.
Good luck on your next step.
Aric
Thanks for all inputs from u guy's
I think my first try will be a HC because of its price and later i will buy or try a SC.
Does anyone know how much a Supercap could cost, in great shape ...
Kind regards
Alex
Cost of a secondhand Supercap will spend on a number of things; where you are in the world, age - whether Olive or current style, whether DR or not, whether it has been serviced recently, or how many years since last service, private sale with no comebacks or dealer sale with possibly some support and warranty (ranging from bare minimum right up to personal visit and installation by the dealer).
