Apple IPhone 7 - who's upgrading?
Posted by: Tony2011 on 09 September 2016
I have just ordered the new iPhone 7. I usually upgrade every 3 years. Could not be bothered with the 5 sibblings or 6. I was going to buy a new one anyway as my iPhone 5 screen decided to detach itself from its main body.
Nothing major has caught my attention apart from the now defunct headphones socket.
I have never been a fan of their phones so won't miss a thing and hardly listen to phones on the go. I'm sure in in years to come they'll get rid of those prongs hanging down from your ears.
Has anyone else upgraded?
Are any phones actually "fan-worthy"? I suppose it is down to what you want from a phone, and how much joy you can extract from using it. Taking decent pictures and controlling my Naim rig sweetens the phone concept enough for me, with anything north of a 4S. I admit the two-lens camera with optical stabilization in the 7 Plus stirs a bit of interest.

Currently trying to upgrade my pristine two-year-old 6Plus to a 7Plus so that I can pass my 6Plus on to a friend whos Samsung really needs turning into a missile...
Seem to be locked into a battle of wills with my provider who doesn't seem to be able to comprehend that I am happy to pay a couple of hundred quid to upgrade the phone and continue paying £50 for 20Gb data / unlimited texts and unlimited minutes as I do now rather than changing my contract and paying £70+ a month for 2Gb data but no upgrade cost.

Don't worry, just send more money, £119 ($139) will do & you can buy the matching wireless ear phones, you get one for each ear & with no wires connecting them together I expect there will be a healthy market selling & buying lost & found single ear phones.
I doubt I will upgrade ... currently have a 6 Plus and while I've in the past upgraded every 1-2 years, the 6 Plus is still working well and there is nothing I feel I'm missing. The lack of headphone socket doesn't really bother me; just nothing compelling to upgrade and may wait till next year...
I bought an SE earlier this year. It's just brilliant - the tech gubbins of a 6s in a body the size of a 5. It cost me £359 and I have a sim only Vodafone contract for £12 a month. The idea of spending £600 or more on a 7 just to get silly wireless headphones that you'll either lose or have stolen seems bizarre. But then I'm not a hip and happenin' metro dude Apple man like our Phil, but a silly old fool who can't remember what day it is.

"Hip and happenin' metro dude Apple man..."
*chuckle*
Nahhhh ... Just have too much invested in paid for apps to be able to justify looking at anything other than Apple, I've got used to having a big screen (I have hands like shovels) and my friend needs a new phone.

I settled for the 128gb 7 - small pockets and hand - in jet black. No contract. I'll keep my current sim deal with 4gb data , unlimited calls and texts for 16.99 per month, with a saving of £450 in the course of 2 years. Some of the deals out there are just a blooming rip off.
the new one is also waterproof !!! handy when you are doing the washing up. but the headphone socket thing is kind of annoying. we all know it wasn't really "a courageous move". just apple trying to make more $$$$ out of headphone manufacturers. i would love to use the SE like HH but my eyesight is just not up to it anymore. i need a bigger screen. would love to rip myself away but like Phil it just seems too much hassle. bloody hell i hate them.
I'll stick with my 5S, unless either of my kids upgrade, then I might have the 6.
Not too bothered iPhones just get more expensive with more for me useless features. If they could put more effort into making their products work better in real world it would help.

Phil - the maths is easy. GBP 20 / month extra for 10 months = GBP 200.
It's always better to buy a mobile handset rather than pay a mobile operator for it.
I will wait a bit with upgrading my shiny iPhone 6S - nothing wrong with it and more importantly it works with my BMW.
I'm still thinking of upgrading my 2-year old 5C to an SE as I prefer to retain the compact size which is much easier for fitting into pockets. That said I watched the 'showbiz' launch and I thought the entry level 7 in jet black was quite tempting. I like the new waterproof feature.
I surely would miss the headphone output and wouldn't like to have to carry yet another adapter from lightning to audio with me. So not keen on upgrading to iPhone 7.
I only have a company iPhone - so I will only upgrade when the current 6 one is not functioning properly anymore. Which is fine for me as I am not looking forward to this adapter thing and as I don't see a big benefit outside the battery time.
I'm with HH. I changed my 5 to an SE early this year out of choice for my private phone - currently have a 6 as my work phone - which seems like a brick in comparison. Can't see me changing to a 7.
I will change to a 7 next month. We are currently with EE and cannot wait to get away as the service has been dreadful so it's back to Vodafone. We will get new phones as one is suffering from touch screen spot failures and another is suffering from having been shut in a car door and dropped.
To me it's a pity that the dual camera is only on the 7S as this is too big to easily fit into a pocket.
In answer to HH's "The idea of spending £600 or more on a 7 just to get silly wireless headphones that you'll either lose or have stolen seems bizarre"; this is a lack of understanding on your part. Apple expect you to pay an extra £159 for the privilege of looking as if you have stuck a couple of electric toothbrush heads in your ears.
PeterJ - love it!!!
The point about size is important. There comes a point when a mobile isn't a mobile anymore.

The 7 is just about right in terms of portability and buying the phone upfront and outright from Apple saves kudos in the long run.
I have a iPhone 6 that is work-issued. First phone I've ever really liked. Big enough screen to read actual stuff, like documents and books. Thin light and just works. No need to upgrade.
Apple earbuds, wireless or not, just aren't shaped for my ears. They simply fall out. They also sound absolutely appalling. I have no idea why anyone would put up with them. I use an iPod classic for portable music. I don't want to flatten my phone battery by listening to music.
I've never been keen on Apple's headphones sound as previously stated. The new phone comes with adapters to fit your old headphones. I have always used either Sennheiser or Bose headphones with my very rare outings on public transport.
I love their products and forward thinking but Apple need to sort out their headphones and streaming issues.
I am holding out with a flip top phone as long as I can.
I have not had a cell device since 2002.
Headphones are an accessory . . . whether Apple's versions are good, bad or indifferent does not affect me at all when it comes to choosing a smartphone. For those who don't realize it, Apple phones work with any brand of headphones ;-)
Great invitation in the wireless headphones. If Apple can design this kind of Specialized silicon, the potential is endless
I thought wireless headphones have been around for a while.. Tend to be convienient, but not great in absolute SQ terms.. Which is hardly suprising.. Also I don't think Apple designs silicon .. They tend to use ARM and other silicon chip and hardware designers.. I think Apple focus more on the design of the implementation, software and product rather than the underlying technology itself.
As far as upgrade, I'll look at the advances in the camera to see if worth while.. I use my iPhone 6 a lot to snap pics when I don't want to take my Nikon out... However I had such a palaver getting Apple to fix my then new IPhone 6 (the touch pay sensor was faulty) I am reticent to go through the risk of a similar experience with a new Apple phone product.
When Apple is good, it's very very good, when it goes bad, it's horrid...
I ordered iPhone 7 128gb black model immediately when the pre-orders started. Coming from 6S but I usually upgrade every year. I just like to have the newest phone all the time since I use it so much. We have this 36 month payment deal by pretty much all the operators in Finland with zero interest. It makes it financially easy to upgrade. Also 6S has been little disappointing with weaker battery life than 6 and it has had some serious problems in cold weather. I live in Finland so if your phone can't stay on even in +5-10 conditions then it's a big problem to me. I've had few shut downs in those conditions. Maybe 7, being splash proof, could also withstand cold conditions better.
