How good is the xpsdr?
Posted by: wenger2015 on 10 September 2016
After much delay, ( spent most of summer upgrading the house
, selling and buying property is a stressful business). So now have a dedicated hi-fi room, and so decided to finally treat myself to the opportunity of owning a brand new Xpsdr.
After listening to so many forum members singing it's praises , and having listened a couple of times at dealers and Bristol show, both times suitably impressed, I am thinking next stage is to hear xpsdr on ones own system in ones own home.
Box arrived today, it was opened with much excitement and anticipation, only to find NO brundy cable........!!!!!!!!!
Gutted is an understatement........ Dealer subsequently contacted, missing cable will arrive Tuesday next week.....
So come next Tuesday, will I end up disappointed or elated? when I finally get to hear xpsdr in action? (Xpsdr will be hooked up to a cdx2)
As good as a non DR 555ps or not in the same league, depending...(Reading AudioT have a system permenantly set uo in the main room for staff entertainment, and to showcase some recent favourites, in this system with CDX2/282/sc/250 kudos C2 there didn't seem much difference. moving up to the main demo room with the same components it was no contest). You did ask.
You will without doubt have a big smile on your face [@mention:50422349809511500]! I shall of course invite myself over, CDs in one hand and a pint of milk in the other.

I could possibly have a big smile, ( I hope so), and also a big hole in my wallet , you might need to bring the coffee beans as well ![]()
Done!
I've just added a HCDR to my SN. Only been plugged in for a couple of hours and the transformation is fantastic! And I'm not using my CDX2 (still being serviced).
The XPSDR will without doubt make your CDX2 really sing

Just been reading about the improvement of HCdr on SN as opposed to the SN2, possibly the SN2 is ok on its own, but the suggestion is on the SN the difference is vast, when your cdx2 returns from being serviced you will no doubt hear the benefits from that as well ![]()

I would expect the 555DRps to be superior, considering the price tag. ![]()

If my 555PSDR is to go by - up to 3 weeks from the first switch on.

Yes - sounded much better after I switched it on. Before that it was a bit mute...![]()
On a serious note - the sound seems to have gradually improved. Intially it was a bit 'mechanical'. And then after around 3 weeks I realised - 'wow - this is rather good

You'd need at least 4 hangers to replicate the burndy SXPS - one for each power feed ![]()

Discussing alternatives to the Burndy is against forum rules and likely to get you moderated

Good enough to warrant it's asking price took my NDX to another level.

Did you notice an improvement from the off? And how long did the burn in process take?
Hi Wenger, hard to judge as an XPS was added to a NDX at a dealer demo the difference was quite staggering.
At the time I was running a NDX into a Olive system but kept the NDX to use with a new system so I had four new black boxes installed at the same time fortunately the dealers speakers were well run in but it did sound good straight from the box.
The burn in process was an interesting experience by sounding screechy, bass would give a bit of a wobble at times the sound just fell apart but I would say that the system started to settle after about 3 to 4 weeks but saying that it is still improving after many many weeks.
I think the most startling thing was when the dealer took his Spendor D7s away and installed my brand new pair it was quite a shock it took about 7 days of for them to sound anything like the dealers pair and they took a couple of months to finally come on song.
I'm quite sure you'll notice a difference from the start but it will take some time for the box to settle hope you enjoy it.
Yes, it seems 3 weeks approximately, is the burn in time, with some listening pain at various moments... it was similar with my 250 and 282, from new, out of the box , they took about 50...60 hours before they started to sing......pkus I used one of the TQ conditioning/preparation disks
XPSdr update...missing burndy cable arrived, subsequently hooked up to cdx2 and switched on.........i have since been informed burndy is connected the wrong way round, which I find very confusing as the tag at one end of the cable says xps? I assumed that end would be connected to xps? apparently not.....?
As expected a slow start, a little underwhelmed, definitely hearing more depth, a little more detail, but at the same time it's sounding abit harsh and heavy at moments as well, no doubt it's all part of the burning in process... ....i assume it's all a question of time and patience ...
Easily done [@mention:50422349809511500]. I'm sure in a few weeks time she'll be singing. I hear on the grape vine that your dedicated supply is being installed next week too so that will help. I'm looking forward to popping round for a listen soon.
Yes, the dedicated supply, I'm sure will be a significant upgrade in its own right, hopefully it will help bring the best out of the xpsdr , ps your welcome anytime...... the coffee beans are ground and ready to go ![]()
Update..... Xpsdr has been in full flow night and day , approximately 96 hours...............as things stand at the moment ..I can only assume the 'fat lady' must be on holiday ![]()
Well my XPS (non DR) was used but I can remember the first time it was hitched to my CDX2 - no going back - more refined, far more resolution, definitely more musical. I understand the impact on the NDX is even greater.

Lindsay
