How good is the xpsdr?
Posted by: wenger2015 on 10 September 2016
After much delay, ( spent most of summer upgrading the house
, selling and buying property is a stressful business). So now have a dedicated hi-fi room, and so decided to finally treat myself to the opportunity of owning a brand new Xpsdr.
After listening to so many forum members singing it's praises , and having listened a couple of times at dealers and Bristol show, both times suitably impressed, I am thinking next stage is to hear xpsdr on ones own system in ones own home.
Box arrived today, it was opened with much excitement and anticipation, only to find NO brundy cable........!!!!!!!!!
Gutted is an understatement........ Dealer subsequently contacted, missing cable will arrive Tuesday next week.....
So come next Tuesday, will I end up disappointed or elated? when I finally get to hear xpsdr in action? (Xpsdr will be hooked up to a cdx2)

PowerLine is just an icing on a cake.
This is far too extreme, and one of those glib comments of the 'X makes y sound broken' school. It's certainly the case, though, that adding a Powerline to an XPS will not make it into a 555PS.

Fair comment Nigel. Although Fiat does make nice cars - should have written Alfa vs Fiat - probably a closer analogy.
Adding a PowerLine to either XPS or 555PS does help of course. It refines the sound - that's probably the closes description I can think of, but it does not alter it dramatically (certainly not in a way to turn XPS into a 555PS).
Thanks for the response. I asked because I recently picked up a couple of used powerlines at decent prices. It's a very nice upgrade for my gear. (one to HicapDR, one to SN2 and one to nDAC).
I'm not one who describes upgrades as "day and night" and similar phrases. I don't think any upgrades can "blow my mind".
It's clear that powerlines do their job.
Considering both 555PS-DR and XPS-DR are spec-wise the same. I wonder how much the addition of the powerline to the 555PS lifted the performance. The price difference is big, and a lot of music can be bought.... ![]()

I don't think Adam needs to be told to be careful with the English language...
I do realise Adam's English is very good - I was just teasing for goodness sake...

Burndy. Having de-stressed it (hold it at one end by the cable, lift it up enough to let it hang, then oscillate for a bit. Then roughly shape it, plug in the source end, and gently shape to plug in the p/s end.
Then unplug and let it relax. Finally plug it back in, starting with cdp then the XPS. It should go in much more easily now, with no obvious stress on the cable, which will benefit sound. Try to dress your cables so that they're not touching. Attention to detail yields results with Naim.

Hi JWM, Very useful advice , trying to dress the cables without touching is a little challenging though....
Indeed Wenger, challenging yet oh so important. I have found this to be especially true with Burndies.
They are built like a proverbial outhouse, yet are such sensitive souls. Who'd have thought it?
Hence the wise words from JWM.

Yes, absolutely agree, 'but oh so tricky'...maybe all the cables need to be massaged and nurtured ..
