MISTAKE!!!!!

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 15 September 2016

I am taking my niece shopping for vinyl tomorrow, guess who is paying!

That is not the mistake. I was playing her my digital front end, both streaming from my NAS and from Quboz, and I was feeling quiet good about my system. However, I thought I should play a bit of vinyl. Now, I haven't actually played any records since I bought my Focal 1008be IIs. I listen to the system every day but as I am generally programming it is simpler to steam. On went Marvin Gaye, Midnight Love. However much I like my digital front end, and I could play some sub-par vinyl, this was MAGNIFICENT; really. LP12 / ARO / Dyn / Geddon just sings.

Suspect I will be buying even more black stuff for myself tomorrow!

They say vinyl is making a come back but  actually it never went away

Ditto. Also make sure what you get is 33 rpm. Lots of vinyl reissues these days are double 45 rpm Lp's.

Kota - you are right that double 45rpm albums are coming onto the market but these should be instantly recognisable by the fact that they are usually double the price. For any LP12 with a power supply or the old changeable belt drive this should not be a problem.

The real question is do they sound better? Well I own two and have older 33rpm versions. There is a slight difference and the 45rpm versions do have the edge.

can't really tell. The last time I had a Lingo with 45 rpm on my LP12 was a very long time ago and I simply refuse to fight with the adapter and motor these days

Nice thread. Just put into action a new Technics GAE with Ortofon Bronze. Life circumstances meant it had been awhile since I had played vinyl. Maybe it's an age thing but I absolutely love it. Nothing beats it to these ears.

Double 45 rpm, as in 90 rpm?

I am not sure I would be ready to trade my NDS/555DR for a Klimax LP12. :0

Wouldn't make much sense without a record collection. As one without a smart device and having a record collection I wouldn't trade for the converse.

I think you'd find its not a straight trade. The Klimax LP12 would cost a fair bit more, but each has its own advantages.

Hi Mike,

Now, no-one like a smart alec .......ESPECIALLY when they're right!!

Good advice, thanks.

I bought the following albums for me:

Cleo Laine & John Williams - Best Friends
This was a album my parents used to play a lot when I was a teenager. In recent years I have found myself stocking my collection with LPs that were woven into my DNA through time.

Flight of the Condor
This was a BBC series in the early 80s and I seem to remember that the music was unusual and rather good ....find out later!

Julian Bream - Classics for Spanish Guitar
Vivaldi - The Four Seasons, Nigel Kennedy. Somehow I have never bought this version.
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 4 - Ashkenazy & Andre Previn - LSO
Vivaldi Concerto for four violins - I Solisti Veneti (Erato).

For my Neice:

35 albums covering a variety of genres including: Disco; Pop; Rock; Jazz & Comedy,

I chose a Jasper Carrot & a Bob Newhart album for her, I know they will be on YouTube but somehow this feels like it will be more of an experience!

Any music genre on vinyl seems warranted for SQ, but comedy? I never 'got' the RSD comedy releases on vinyl. Bob Newhart had a great wry, dry, self-deprecating humor, but I can't see paying a premium to hear his routine on a LP versus cheaper alternatives.

Hi Joe,

You are completely right, ....but, this was how I first heard Bob Newhart and so it felt a bit like passing a baton!

Comedy. Funnier on good vinyl and a righteous playback system. Maybe 45 rpm reissue is overkill. But, comedy is about story telling and phrasing and timing. I think vinyl makes it intimate and immediate in ways that other mediums don't. Same as with music, for me.

Plus, when Steve Martin breaks out his banjo...

Vinyl is the only way I've heard Newhart's spiel and wow, has it really been 35 years ago? His TV sitcom was a great show back in the day. I hope your niece appreciates Bob's wit as well as your generosity. A great gift to her. Cheers!
