journey so far and ending with NDS into SN2

Posted by: Matthew Johns on 17 September 2016

HI all,

first quick update on journey so far as gotten some real good advice from you guys

running NDX>XPS DR> SN2 (here imminently cannot wait) with Linn majik 140 speakers an upgraded stands

simple stuff done that has improved SQ

Now fitted switchless Mk logic plug socket, an now using wire world matrix 2 strip with 3x naim mains cables (ended up preferring sound to chord mains cable), am planning to trial new din interconnect an speaker cables next weekend (thinking naim hi line, chord signature tuned array and chord Sarum tuned array an chord signature ref speaker cable and naim Nac a5)

so my query is this suppose is more of a dream end point either end up with

NDS>XPS DR> SN2 VS NDX>NAIM DAC>XPS DR>SN2

then some point later would swap out XPS DR with 555ps DR (would also upgrade speakers too)

what are people's views of running NDS into a SN2 especially on a SQ an system partnering perspective???

You could have a look at posts by Bart, who is very happy with his NDS and SN2. I would certainly try it out before spending lots of money on expensive wires.

I would rather do a 272/xps-DR/250 - than either of your two systems...

NDS jumps up and down of NDX/DAC and kicks it into the kerb. That's according to my ears. You should trust your ears.  I don't know anything about the SN2.

SN2 is more than capable of showing the difference between any source component.

Urm NDXXPS2/SN2 seems very nicely balanced.   I'm not familiar with your speakers but that's where I'd look - possibly.  Kudos s10?

Lindsay

Both your endpoint systems seem to be something of a monkfish.  I think Lindsay has a good point.

+2 on the speakers,  a mate had them & swore anything Linn was the bee's knee's until he got out a bit & heard some others,  he ended up Kudos.  Looking at the Stereophile review the 140's frequency response looks particularly up & down.  http://www.stereophile.com/con...speaker-measurements  ,  & the conclusion sums them up I think.  I would go for a listen to anything & they will do better,  Kudos, Neat, Spendor etc.

Isn't this all a bit premature? First, actually get the Supernait, set everything up properly with a decent support and cables, and listen to it for a few months. Then, maybe, start thinking about what to change.

I hadn't noticed that it hadn't all arrived yet. Given that, do nothing for a good while. Until it's all settled down and you are really used to it, you won't know the impact of any changes. And if you have £10,000 of Naim electronics, it really shouldn't need improving from day one. Use the wires that come with the boxes and just enjoy it.

OK, I hadn't noticed that either.

Is this the first recorded case of preemptive upgaradistis (where causality is broken because the upgaradistis condition sets-in before the circumstances that cause it actually occur!)?

Could also be 'pre-emptive upgraditis by proxy'. Need to know more about the home situation.

Bit more info have heard the SN2 with NDX>XPS DRnumerous times at dealer/friends so know what I am getting

am in no rush to upgrade at all was just curious on people's opinions on the 2 systems, especially the NDS into XPS DR>SN2 (thx HH will check bart's post on it)

reason being dealer mentioned had a exdemo NDS he would do deal on back end of next year (giving me first offer)

Happy with speakers for time being but would upgrade in a years time for something in the £3-4K ball park so any thoughts on that be appreciated

thx

You'd be very wise to give it a good while at home, which will be different from hearing it elsewhere. I think the NDS idea is a very good one, it's the jumping in very quickly on expensive cables that is my concern. I use posh cables, but I only bought them after getting the electronics, speakers, stand and dedicated mains sorted first.

+1 Make sure the basics are sorted first rack, mains and mains cables etc once these are sorted they will allow to get the best out of changes made in the future ie interconnect and speakers cables.

When I purchased my system earlier this year made sure I had the basics right, currently I have the posh cables on demo and by adopting this approach  you can certainly hear the improvement.
