Anti Virus program for a windows computer
Posted by: lutyens on 17 September 2016
I have just had to get a new laptop for Ms Lutyens. As I use a Mac I have absolutely no idea about these now!
I used to use a free one many years ago, AVG?. Anyway, what recommendations does anyone have or is it just McAfee?
Many thanks
Just asked my son who does this for a living. Kaspersky is by his reckoning the best paid for one. If your want a free one then 360 total security is his recommendation.
Regards,
Willy.
PS If I related what he said about McAfee the post would be moderated!
Avira on mine. Seems to work and doesn't slow up PC like AVG/Norton
Thank you. I will have a look at those. And yes, I feel the same about McAfee as I do about Murdoch!
+1 for Kaspersky
I use the two that come free with the kit, Windows-10 has Win Defender & BT's NetProtect Plus (McAfee). Both work well with each other, BT NetProtect is on 24/7 & Defender is a manual scan & it is set to remind me once a week. I've read all the bad things about McAfee but for the life of me as a simple home user, & I understand a bit about www & IT, I am struggling to find out what is so bad ...................... I've just installed 360 Total Security to see how that works & its its happy to cooperate with the other progs.
Using Avast (free) here, on Win 7 64 bit. Seems good - less intrusive that Nor***..... But.. YMMV...!
I use AVG used most of the others mentioned but AVG is my favourite.
Having used Kaspersky for 5 years or so, I switched to Norton (Internet Security as opposed to just Anti-virus) last year and have recently renewed my subscription.
The recent and current versions of Norton are actually pretty good, and no longer have the adverse impact on system performance they used to have.
My recommendation would be to go with either Norton or Kaspersky, & possibly with whatever is the cheaper option available at the time. There are some pretty good deals which cover 3 or more computers for example.
My recommendation would also be to avoid McAfee, and I personally would be reluctant to rely solely on AVG, although AVG is a reasonable option.
How are third-party virus protection programs even still a thing? What would be wrong with Windows being fit-for-purpose out of the "box"?

XP Pro for yonks, never had a virus.. Recommended. Also Spywareblaster.
Thank you all. I have gone for Kaspersky in the end. It seemed to have a fair number of supporters and only a few detractors. I will review in a year!
