RE: Voltage adjustments

Posted by: Audioneophyte on 18 September 2016

Considering a move from the US to Spain... and from 110 volts to 220...   of course the current boxes are all 110 volt...

Anyone deal with this adjustment on a temporary basis or make the changes permanent? or?

Of course buying a different or second system...  but... thats not my question...  has anyone changed their boxes? gotten a transformer to change the voltage of a dedicated spur?

thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Several members seem to have successfully had Naim change the windings on the transformers when moving continents. It must be done by Naim or an authorized service center though.

Ola !    Naim can change them of course, but that's a permanent and expensive change... and it's permanent and expensive to go back to 110v.

Your best bet has to be to do what we have to do in the UK when we want to run kit from accross the pond and that's to buy a voltage dropping transformer.  These will cost you from $quite cheap to $quite expensive.  However the following advice seems appropriate:  IMPORTANT - WHEN SELECTING A CONVERTER WE SUGGEST THAT YOU BUY ONE WITH 3 TIMES THE WATTAGE OF THE PRODUCT YOU ARE CONVERTING    That's from this US web site: voltagesuperstore.com

Their 5500watt model will set you back $221, whilst their 10,000 watt (!) model that requires hard wiring into the mains in your new home, will cost a mere $399.  That one's a military grade device that includes a voltage regulator (as do some lesser models) - surely the device to which you'd entrust your precious Naim gear?

There's the phase question too... 60khz or 50khz... and how does the drop from 60 to 50 affect your audio equipment?  Well truth is I haven't a clue and doubtless someone else will chip in with the answer to that one... I suppose it will have the effect of slowing down your music     (or not).

You don't say whereabouts in Spain you're thinking of coming to, or where in the US you are now, but I can recommend Spain as a place to live... it's actually full of Brits who have escaped the rain and fog and cold UK weather... and most parts do have the new mains electricity rather than the usual oil lamps or candles.

Enjoy !!

Don t do the step-up transformer option, it kills Sound Quality. These cheap transformers even with 3 time the VA rating, will not keep up with Naim toroidals.

have your units voltage changed in the US or in Spain by respective distributors. In fact I recommend the destination's one as he can better test the modified unit ( he can better reset the bias of amps for example). It is simple to do if you know how and does not cost much.

dont forget to get official power cords

Naim products ate designed to perform as good with both freqencies.

Further to Manu's reply I am sure I read here somewhere else that step up/down transformers are strongly discouraged for use with Naim as they will unduly affect performance.

AN, there's a fair bit on this here - including a very recent thread on the same issue - so try a search.  The bottom line, as Manu says, is get the voltage changed on the kit itself.  Step up/down transformers will throttle performance of your kit, so you may as well not bother.  Get in touch with the local distributor for Spain (Hometech - Gordon McGlade) and ask for a quote to have the work done.

The most appropriate solution could depend on if your move is temporary or permanent.

My 'temporary' move (in the other direction) lasted a third of my working life which was a lot longer than originally envisaged and I ended up using a temporary step down transformer on my Linn equipment - now replaced with new Naim. For sure, it wasn't optimum and the transformers cluttering the places were a PITA but it was cost effective and in any event I was having so much fun doing other things that it wasn't a big deal but YMMV.

It partly depends what equipment too...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but things like the pre-amp don't need changing - its the power supply that will need swapping.  I assume the same is true with CDP used with external PSU.

It may be more cost effective to sell in USA, then rebuy in Europe the equipment that needs converting.  Possibly take advantage of any upgrades or side grades you have in mind too!

a) NDS - Sell off the 555 PSU and buy the PSU over there.

b) Nac 552: Get it changed

c) Nap500s - here's your oppurtunity to get them DR upgraded at the same time.

I'm in Canada. Send all your boxes to me, please. Buy new when you arrive in Spain. We both win.
