Do you prefer loads of crap threads or a few good ones?

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 September 2016

I have no idea, what do you think?

+1 for the sentiment. Nice one HH.

Posted on: 19 September 2016 by rjstaines

An eclectic mix of both, methinks.

I suspect this is going to be a crap thread...

....Having roast pork and crackling with cabbage, broccoli, leeks and asparagus gives me the most smelly poo.

Asparagus makes my wee smell funny.

I would prefer loads of good threads about real (actual) issues & none of the inane pointless that have appeared in recent times.

If god existed would he listen to vinyl or stream hi-res?

God listens to both... same as me.

I would prefer quality threads, focused on Naim related topics.
As opposed to a rank-building exercise that one of the Forum Members appears to be doing over the recent months.

What are you trying to tell us RJ?

And yet we still respond to them. Funny that.

I stopped as of yesterday.
Responded to this one as it was started by Mr Peckish Fish who clearly does not need to build his Community Rank, but seems to be genuinely concerned.

I don’t mind crap threads, you can take them of leave them. What I do mind is when a good threads are virtually killed off by uber-pseudo-technobabble.

Posted on: 19 September 2016 by Harry

Yeah. Although when that happens the thread is no longer serving its original function and can safely be ignored.

I think mildly irritated rather than concerned. The forum is what we make of it, but it does seem to be plumbing the depths on occasions, and far more than it used to. It's not just the moronic 'what do you prefer' threads but those in the hifi corner where people ask really dopey questions and have clearly made no effort at all to formulate a sensible question. Some of the questions could be answered in 30 seconds with a google search. If people cannot be bothered to ask a sensible well thought out question how can they expect to get the support they seek? Perhaps hifi is fundamentally dull and nudge nudge jokes about massaging burndies, wee and poo really are more interesting.

Crap threads make by buttons fall off.

I like it with hollandaise sauce or butter. The asparagus.

I agree - one person's crap might well be another person's caviar - and I don't think we should return to the old elitist days of the Naim forum.

However I wish a few more people would learn to use  the search function before mindlessly raising and repeating the same questions - perhaps there should be a sticky on it...

I think this!

Posted on: 19 September 2016 by dayjay

I hadn't realised we had a choice!  Up to now I have just ignored the crap threads, excluding this one obviously, but I suppose everyone has a different view on what is crap.

A lot of people have absolutely no idea what good hifi is about - hence the "silly" questions. The knowledgeable ones among us (I certainly don't count myself as knowledgeable) should show more patience and help newcomers formulate sensible questions (sorry, I've been a lecturer all my life, and part of the job is to help people formulate sensible questions).

I also believe that this forum is one of the most civilised ones I've come across. HH might get annoyed at times, but I'm sure He would get far more irritated if He were to visit, for instance, the French forum devoted to Naim hifi.

Not infrequently threads that might fit the 'crap' category are started by people who clearly don't have English as their first language and therefore might also find searching the forums tricky. So some patience may be appropriate.

Agreed Clive, except that I'd call it humility not patience.

These are very rare in my experience, and of course everyone should understand the challenge of writing in another language. I'm thinking more of threads by people with big systems who really ought to be able to work it out, but seemingly just cannot be bothered. 'I have two 500s, should I get another' etc.
