Indie Pop, Soft Rock Recommendation Similar to Scarlet Album

Posted by: ryder. on 20 September 2016

I have dug out this old Scarlet CD album and played it on the system recently. It has been quite a while since I listened to this album but man the recording quality of the CD is superb. Great tunes as well played through my newly acquired gear (NAC 282, Hicap DR, NAP 250 DR through a Chord QBD 76). The music was previously played on a NAC 202, NAP 200 and PSU from Israel.

Does anyone have this album? It's a pity the group didn't last long. One of the members left during the early stages before the band had any major success.

Can I have some recommendation on music with similar style? Thanks.

I realised I have posted this in the wrong section. Moderator - would appreciate if this can be moved to the Music Room.

Thanks.

Memories... I worked for WEA at the time and remember plugging "Independent Love Song" at radio.  They also released a second album called 'Chemistry' but it didn't even chart and the record company dropped them soon after.

Other artists you may want to consider investigating include early Sineand O' Connor albums (The Lion & The Cobra, I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got), Shakespear's Sister (Sacred Heart & Hormonally Yours), Voice of The Beehive ( Honey Lingers), Paula Cole (This Fire),  Lisa Loeb (Tails), and Sophie B Hawkins (Tongues & Tails) are all worth a listen.  I would also check out Maria McKee's song "Show Me Heaven" - it's not typical of all her stuff (she was originally in Lone Justice and most of her albums are more roots/country based), but if you like what you hear you might be tempted to investigate further.  Shivaree (check out 'Who's Got Trouble'), would be another one worth in a similar vein.  Lastly please check out Everything But The Girl.  Their "Home Movies" compilation is a great place to start.

Not everything in the above list will appeal but i'm sure some will

Thanks King Size. Yes, the recording is by WEA. Really stellar recording quality on this album. I don't recall any of my pop or rock CDs that sound as good as this one.

Independent Love Song is the one. The abrupt burst of dynamics in passages coupled by Cheryl Parker's rich vocals at high levels shook the entire house. Will check out the artists that you have listed above. I have Lisa Loeb's Tails and will need to dig that CD out from the stack.

Cheers.

Looked up Scarlet Naked on the interweb and got distracted somewhat.

more on an indie pop, soul type I can recommend Camera Obscura's  ' My Maudlin Career' and 'Desire Lines' albums. Both recorded with a spector wall of soul sound.    Aimee Man's - Lost in Space. Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party's -Orpheo.    Hope Sandoval's - Bavarian fruit bread. Saint Etienne's - Foxbase Alpha.

Ryder, I have the second album Chemistry which I've just given a digital spin. Strange not sure why I bought the CD way back when but playing it this morning I'd forgotten how good it is - songs and production are top quality. Also, strange I don't have the first album - just remedied via the Amazonian River where I see in the used section (great place to find bargains) you can pick up Chemistry for a couple of quid.

I'd go along and endorse King Size and Toby Jug and say that the artists they mention are essential buys, if not well worth checking out.

Here's one to give a listen to - Til Tuesday 'J for Jules'

Tobyjug, yes. Similarly got some unwelcome results when I performed a search on "Scarlet Naked" to obtain a photo of the album cover. In the end, Scarlet Cheryl Parker did the trick. Thanks for the suggestions. Will certainly check them out.

Andy, strangely enough I only have the first album and do not have the second album Chemistry. I will pick up the album soon. I didn't take the initiative to go for the CD as I read that this 2nd album missed the UK chart back then and WEA dropped the band after this failure. It is useful that you find the production (and song) quality on Chemistry to be excellent as well.

King Size, I am currently listening to Everything But The Girl. Nice tunes. Thanks.
