Asset R5 for QNAP, OSX, Linux & Pi
Posted by: sjbabbey on 20 September 2016
Asset UPnP R5 for QNAP etc. has now been officially released after beta testing.
Change details from the dBpoweramp/Asset UPnP forum:
* DSD support
* UPnP search support
* New database design, faster at indexing, browsing albums
* Upstream art uses compilation artist, but will replace with non-compilation later
* Now uses persistent browse ids (even if asset is restarted)
* Dynamic browsing added [List Albums]
* Monkey’s Audio codec
* Added a forced timed rescan option to help with scenarios where folder change tracking doesn't work reliably
* Added an option to hide [All Tracks] / [Shuffle Tracks] items - in both configuration and per control point overrides; use [NoAllTracksItems] in control points override to hide these items.
* Fixed a bug causing MP3 files to take a long time to index on slow machines
* Fixed “download configuration dump” giving malformed file on machines with little /tmp space, QNAP in particular
Sweet...Ive wanted to play around with DSD files, but havent installed the Asset beta. I'll give this version a try!
Being something of an Asset novice, do you just upgrade from within the Qnap? Will I need to reset all the various settings, or does it remember them? I don't want to risk messing it all up, given that it's working so well.
Nigel
All the settings are preserved if you do an in place upgrade. I've just done mine having been running beta for some time.
Go to the website and click on the About link. Click on the 'Registered users update with Registration Retrieval' link. Click Begin Registration Retrieval and enter your order number when prompted. You should then see a page with the Premium download. Download the file.
Access your QNAP via the web interface and open the App Center. Click on the Settings (cog icon - top right of the window), browse to the file you downloaded and click on the Install button. It will take a minute or so to install and the music will stop!
I suggest that you note down the number of tracks and albums before and after the upgrade just so you can do a reconciliation.
If you have any problems I'm around tomorrow and you know how to get in touch.
Richard
Thanks Richard. I'll try to give it a go tomorrow. Thanks for your help!
Sorry I didn't reply earlier HH. You only need to uninstall Asset if you had a 30 day trial version of Asset. As long as you have a premium registered version you can do a straight update via the QNAP app centre.
As you say, you don't want to have to redo the configuration or Browse Tree once you've got it the way you like.
Thanks Richard for upgrade guide - excellent - had it all installed in a couple of minutes.
The beta version of R5 sure cleared up a lot of issues I had with rescanning and cover art. Assume it was this fix (Added a forced timed rescan option to help with scenarios where folder change tracking doesn't work reliably).
One thing I've noticed is that after rescanning Asset, and clearing the app upnp and image caches, it takes about two hours for the app to show all the albums and tracks, whereas before it took just a couple of minutes. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.

On Linux, no. It seems to be the same as before perf-wise.
I have Asset loaded on a Qnap, if that helps at all.
I will fess up to user error - I was waiting for it to do something it was never going to do, because there was a mistake in the browse tree. It's a shame that the update changed a few of my settings, but it seems to be working ok, and it's pretty speedy even operated from the end of the garden on the phone. Hopefully all is now well.
Nigel - what was the mistake in the browse tree? Was it the entry I suggested!
I upgraded yesterday and i lost all my setting, browsong tree included. It took quiet a while before to get back the all library due to a deep and complete rescan but it seems to work. Also, for unexplained reasons, i had to modify some tags which were not taken in the right way previously.
Otherwise everything is ok.
I've had no issues whatsoever, which TBH quite surprised me. The only thing that changed apart from some of the browsing features was that after a three minute rescan I could play DSD with Asset. So it looks like there is the usual variability in user experience.

Your suggestion was fine, but there was something else missing too. It's interesting that Ikoun had the same problems as me, with the settings and browse tree being reset.
One good thing though - in the previous version, when I went into Playlists and New Albums, I always had to change it from the A-Z view to actually see the new albums. With R5 it works first time, which is really helpful.
HH
Just installing the new version of Asset and for the first time I've noticed the "Edit Browse Tree" link at the bottom of the "Configure"page, what is the browse tree? As a long time Sonos user this is all very new to me!
Best
Chris
The browse tree determines how you navigate the UPnP server control point (i.e. the naim app) to find the albums/music you want to play. You set up the views you want to see i.e. by Artist, by Genre, by Album etc. In each category you can then split down to a second or third level so you might set up a view by Genre to then show Artists and then Albums e.g. Progressive Rock/Pink Floyd/DSOTM etc.
Initially Asset has a whole host of default views but I'd keep it simple to start off with just a few main categories plus the playlist view.
For further info, you could have a look at the dBpoweramp/Asset UPnP forum for a few ideas.
Thanks SJ, I'm all for keeping it simple! I never set that up when I installed Asset so I guess I must have a default view?
Asset has finished the scan, so presumably when I next add a ripped album I just hit the "rescan folders detecting changes" link and not a full scan again?
Once Asset has done its initial scan, updates should happen automatically and quickly i.e. you shouldn't have to rescan after adding new albums provided they have been tagged correctly. I find that an album will appear in the naim app within a few minutes of being added to a folder being monitored by Asset.
Here is a screenshot of my browse tree config.
That's very helpful SJ, will digest it in the morning. So new albums are picked up automatically, wonderful!
Incidentally, I've just made a change to the configuration of Asset to put the artist before "the" as in Beatles, The, how does the change take place, do I need to reason then and do I have to reset the Naim app after a rescan?
If a config change requires a rescan then this will happen automatically, you will see a rescan start when you click on the "Return to main page" link. If Asset has scanned all the tag data and there is only a minor change a rescan should not be necessary.
It will rescan if you put 'the' after artist.
Thanks for clarifying that HH. I suppose that's necessary as Asset will need to rescan the Artist tags.
Otherwise DSD recognition works flawlessly - good job ! For tagging on Mac the DSD files, Kid3 is the one.
Happy listening everybody
Cheers
How did you install Asset for QNAP? My AppCenter cannot find it?
