New approach

Posted by: Sundance on 21 September 2016

I'm confused.

My new House is being rewired and cat6 Ethernet installed

Room1 for listening
Main hifi 282, CDX2, 252, SC2, SBLs on dedicated mains.
Planning to buy NDX and Unitiserve
A non- smart TV here so How can I play TV thru main hifi?
Can I connect to Apple TV in room2

Room2 for movies
Muso, new smart TV, freeview sat box and Apple TV for iTunes movies

Want to connect TV to Muso as soundbar, do I need TOSLINK optical cable for this?

Room3
New smart TV and Muso QB. How can I watch my iTunes movies?

Thanks for any help for a fresh approach.

No experience with Muso or Apple TV products, but in room 1 you should be able to run an optical cable in to the NDX, if the TV model supports it. Most do, I run one from my TV to 172.

Also worth investigating whether a normal NAS would do what you need as well as a Unitiserve. Much cheaper if so.

I agree a Unitiserve needs some thinking about,  once all the CD collection is ripped, a US becomes a bit of an expensive option (IMO) (opinions vary).   I ripped direct to my NAS from PC with dBpoweramp software using a mix of a fast desktop DVD drive & slower laptop drive.  Once I got the hang of it,  it was not much more that a boring production line process.  It took about 2 weeks.

I also have an optical "cable" from Sony "dumb" TV to NDX.

Depends on the age of your TV.

Have a look at the back of the unit to see if you have any analogue audio outputs. You might see a set of RCA outputs. If so, connect these to one of the analogue inputs of the 282 using an RCA to DIN cable.

You might also have an optical (digital) output. If so, run an optical cable to one of the NDX's optical inputs. The NDX converts the digital signal to analogue.

If you have an optical out make sure that it can send 2 Channel PCM. I have a Panasonic Plasma TV with an Optical output; but it can only pass what it is fed. It will not downres to 2.0 PCM which is what most regular DACs need.

Plus one.

If you don't have analogue audio outputs, buy a scart to RCA adaptor. That might work.

I wish I still had my old non smart TV, I'm have terrible trouble getting my Sega Megadrive to work with the smart TV.

Good point on 2 ch PCM,  5.1 makes an 'orrible noise

Volume (input trim) may have to be adjusted for the downmixed PCM.

Hi Sundance,

we connect our Panasonic plasma tv (remember when they were considered high tech?!) to an auxiliary line level input of the NAC52 with a simple, 2 core + earth, analogue RCA (for the back of the TV) to DIN (for the NAC52) cable.  The only note of caution about doing this is that you may start to pick up a 50Hz hum through your hifi system.  If so, it's because the TV is using the Naim pre-amp as a path to electrical earth.  Fortunately, this is easy and inexpensive to fix.  We bought a "ground loop isolator" for the princely sum of about £6 from a well known, tax avoiding, on-line retailer.  It connects between the TV audio outputs and the cable.

It is all very low tech and low cost (about £20 for the cable, connectors & ground loop isolator).  However, I am sure that there are far more high tech and sophisticated ways to achieve the same result.

Hope this helps, FT

Hi Sundance

I previously used optical out from TV or set top box into ndac for movies with no problems

Currently run sky qb via optical to Muso in the kitchen. Audio on Sky box is set to normal which equates to pcm.

I am coming to the end of a house extension with dedicated CU for the lounge and cat 6 installed for streaming purposes. My main system has been packed away since March and probably for the next couple of months - serious withdrawal is taking hold

Hope the build is going well
