Linn Lingo 1

Posted by: kota on 23 September 2016

A lot has been said regarding the Lingo detrimental effect when used with Naim olive kit. In the past I've used a Lingo 1 when they first come out with my then 32.5/HiCap/250 chrome bumper which according to Darran at Class A, had no mains filter in the IEC socket. Actually it's this first type of sockets he uses these days if you want one changed while servicing. To tell you the truth, I didn't notice any sound degradation then which only comes to show that Darran is right.

I'm now getting a much later Lingo 1 to be used with my present olive 72/HiCap/180 which definitely has the filter fitted  and I need your help. My question is will a dedicated radial spur for the Lingo and totally independent from the one I have the Naim kit connected to solve the problem? Also, I do have a Naim cd 3.5 player and I was wondering if I should get the alternative conn 401/E umbilical cable which has the extra earth wire to be connected to the LP12 pclip bolt like in the valhalla PS. I read somewhere if you only have the LP12 as a source some buzzing might occur but if you also use a Naim cd player this cable wouldn't be needed in order to avoid any earth loop.

Any input on this gladly appreciated.

Cheers,

Pedro -

You'll love the Lingo.  One of those "Wow" moments for me when first heard.

A separate spur is the best answer.  And try to keep the Lingo physically as far from your Naim boxes as is practicable.

Enjoy!

If the archives go that far back, look for a thread called "Lingo: The Evil Within", or something like that. I think the author was one Andrew Weekes.

Doing a "Weekes modification" on your Lingo was all the rage for a while.

You can remove the filtered mains inlet and replace it with an unfiltered one. All you need is a screwdriver and a soldering iron. Back in the day I swapped out the filtered inlet and it made a substantial difference. The other option is to get an Armageddon, which is even better.

I understood that to do so would compromise SQ.

When I discussed this years ago with the then US Naim importer NANA, they surprised by not trying to talk me into a Armageddon after I mentioned it. They said my Lingo 1 was fine, just plug it into an outlet separate from my Naim. Never had an issue following that advice.

Thanks  for the replies guys.

I'll install a new radial spur just for the Lingo and see how it sounds. If it works, fine. If not, I'll change the IEC socket for this one I already have.
