System re-build.
Posted by: dave marshall on 25 September 2016
I've just spent the afternoon stripping down and rebuilding the entire system, including the Fraim.
Now I don't know whether it's simply relief at, having put everything back together again, I still have music at all, or whether sitting here somewhat knackered, I'm just pleased that the marathon task is finally completed, but it sounds brilliant!
No way of knowing what particular aspect the re-build contributes most to this happy outcome, but I can thoroughly recommend this course of action to everyone, should you find yourself with an otherwise empty afternoon. ![]()
Sorry, I don't understand, what's an empty afternoon? ![]()
Yes, mine could do with a rebuild and a tighten up of the Fraim but the prospect of the resulting temporary disorder is not so appealing. Don't suppose you fancy a trip darn sarf, coffee (and something stronger if needed - I have pub) permanently on tap.
Just thought I would ask.![]()

One where I finally decide to keep the afternoon free in order to carry out a re-build of the system, a tedious task which I've been putting off for far too long.
The outcome seems to have well worthwhile, so now, I can spend an otherwise empty evening having a blast. ![]()

Sorry Nigel, but this afternoon's task was such fun, I couldn't possibly deny you the chance to enjoy yourself too! ![]()

Hi Dave
When you say re-built, do you actually remove the uprights from the shelf and put them back again or just check that they are not loose. That's what I did just check so just wonder if you do remove the uprights?
Thanks ayap1

Yes, I took the Fraim completely to bits and started from scratch.
Maybe not strictly necessary, but I know that if I didn't, I'd subsequently wonder if I should have! ![]()
Wouldn't it be easier to call in some guys from Naim to rebuild it ![]()
Easier? Yes.
Cheaper? No.
Think of all the additional music I can now buy with the money saved. ![]()
OK Dave, how does a tenner sound to come and rebuild mine. You can get a couple of CDs with that.
Tempted?
I thought not, I'll get me coat.

Nah, I don't ever get any with that much free time in them!
funny ! despite the back-breaking difficulty (heavy amp), I undid everything and put back together again (cleaned up a bit)and found the sound "better" in a strangely weird way - I hate to say it but almost like a tune-up .... anybody felt this before ? I guess what they say about cleaning your contacts may be true after all
Well, I just did my system rebuild yesterday. Having bought an extra rack. Clean up the cables arrangement, seperating the preamp and snaxo from the powered black box and of course LP12 on the other side. With total of 3 tower racks now (no fraim yet).
Thought of active saving money but eventually not LOL. At the end of the day I am just as happy as you are. ![]()
My 'feeling' is (I have no absolute proof) it is the cleaning of cable/socket contacts (by inserting a few times) and cable (re)dressing that comes with a rebuild that are the primary activities in bringing about an enhancement in SQ. If I am right, it might be possible to save the time and effort required for a full rebuild. I do accept that tightening the cones on the Fraim does also help - particularly with relatively new Fraims that are more prone to a small amount of wood shrinkage as it dries out, causing the supports/cones to loosen. My Fraim is several years old now and doesn't seem to need much tightening theses days.
Just a follow up to last weekend's re-build.
The NAP 300 and it's power supply were living on the base level of the Fraim, in adjacent stacks.
As part of the re-build, I've moved them up onto the next levels up, so the base levels are now empty.
This has had the effect of getting their connecting Burndies off the floor for the first time, and, a week later, I can confirm that this action is well worthwhile.
I know that advice to this end is contained here https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...a-bit-about-burndies
and elsewhere, but I never had empty Fraim levels until now to facilitate this.
I cannot stress enough how important it seems to be to get these off the floor, to the point where the cost of a couple of levels of Fraim might be the equivalent of a black box upgrade, at far lesser cost............it's that good.
I find re-building a system mildly therapeutical. One would of course wonder what sort of therapy am I in ![]()
Both systems were overhauled and moved last weekend - took almost 6 hours.
Adam,
As I've already admitted, I can never say for sure what aspect of the re-build contributed most to the much enhanced sound here.
But, as above, for the first time, I've managed to get the 300 Burndies off the hard floor, so maybe cable dressing is all! ![]()
Could help with the setting of positive vibes that Friday just passed had a " black moon rising ". The time when there are two black moons within a month. Same as a " blue moon " when there are two full moons within a month but more rare. Next one is in 2019. ....That's a lot of dust

It's the dusting of all those Fraim shelves and black boxes!![]()

Wow, 300 burndies. I've only got one and that's enough of a nuisance. Cable dressing must be a real challenge.
Hi HH,
Well, I found myself with some spare Fraim, and had that "What if" moment.
Raising the 300 and it's power supply up from the base has gotten those pesky Burndies off the floor, and, who can say, that might be the single biggest factor in the SQ improvement.
Or maybe it's those new ethernet cables.............who knows?.....................but it's all good. ![]()
You missed my inane joke there, I think.
So
