SL Interconnect install
Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 26 September 2016
I just received my first SL Interconnect and have installed it (replacing hiline). When I installed my hiline the common wisdom from forum members was that the DIN end going to the preamp should be inserted fully and then backed out about a mm or so (I assume for de-coupling purposes). I've applied this to the SL install as well... just wanted to check if this is also recommended for the SL cables.
I doubt it would make an audible difference. Personally, I would insert it as far in as it could go. ![]()
When I bought my SL IC, I was also advised by the dealer to insert fully and than back out a small amount. Not sure what actual difference, if any, this makes but it would be daft to ignore the advice of dealers who I am sure would be briefed by Naim HQ on such matters.
When I got my din to XLR it came with a little instruction sheet. It's in the loft now, but I'm sure it said to put it right in and then withdraw it very slightly.
Thanks for the feedback!

HH's memory is correct. If you can read it, look at the penultimate bullet on the picture of the instructions above i.e. push fully home then withdraw by approx 1 mm.
Thanks for the definitive answer :-)
On another note... the directionality of the cable as received is incorrect... so it will be going back. Have contacted the dealer and he has ordered the correct version (RCA at source) as originally ordered. Until I receive it, I will be running the one I have backwards.
Would this protocol be advised for all DIN interconnects at the pre amp end?

SL aside, although I note it says to do the same, its always been a Naim thing; even with the "Lavenders" it was a thing to remove or loosen off the locking ring. I think it was something to do with working better without the mechanical contact between plug & case. I have my own made DIN IC cables with Neutrik plugs - no locking rings like the HiLine & SL - but I still push in & pull out a mm. Never heard any difference, but it's "how I do it".
I have my hiline inserted all the way in my SN2, so I will try pulling it 1 mm and see if it makes any difference.

Yes, I have all my Snaic locking rings unlocked by a quarter to half a turn as recommended. I believe this way imparts less stress on the connecting pins/sockets and helps to decouple the whole plug/socket arrangement and helps reduce air-bound vibration interference. That, I believe is the theory - who knows if it actually has any effect though I assume the bods at Naim have done some testing to verify it is worth the small amount of effort it takes.
Well, when you put it like that Adam, it seems a tad expensive ![]()
