How to use a Synology station as backup for UnitiServe

Posted by: Stefan Vogt on 27 September 2016

Hi folks,

I've tried a couple of ways to creating a backup for UnitiServe, and today I installed a Synology DS216j with 1TB SSD which seems to work fine. I created single folder 'uservebackup' and was hoping that the UnitiServe can see this under 'Manage Network Shares'. But no luck (I tried 'Refresh'). Could someone possibly tell me the secret - how do I need to configure the Synology so that the UnitiServe can see this as Network Share?

This should not be that complicated (before I tried AriesMini as backup, I tried USB-drive on BTHomeHub, but these didn't work: each was actually seen by the UnitiServe as Network Share, but then they couldn't be used as Backup).

Cheers,

Stefan

Is the folder enabled for access to all types of users (even 'guest') with full read / write access?

You might find some useful info on the thread:

...or if you lose the will to live, just phone Naim support and get Phil to do it for you.

Hi Adam, yes, full read / write access for all.

And thanks Chrissu, your link helped me to check that I did everything correctly, and I did (well, I added the workgroup NAIM). With still no show in UnitiServe, I tried "Add new share" and entered '\\syno1', which is my name for the Synology NAS. Now this showed up in the UnitiServe, but when I then tried to "Add a New Music Store", I get "There are no shares currently online". Maybe '\\syno1' was not enough and I should have given the folder name, too (that is, '\\syno1\uservebackup', but I didn't find a backslash on the naim interface ...

Ok - I think I know....

Have you activated this Share and deisgnated it as a back up?

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by Stefan Vogt

Update: now the UnitiServe sees \\syno1\uservebackup (I used the Mac for the backslash), it's active (green), but again, at "Add New MusicBackup" I get "There are no shares currently online".

Perhaps close, but failed. Perhaps miles away. Who knows.

If synology is Linux based then directories are identified using a forward slash (/) separator rather than a backslash.

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by Stefan Vogt

Thanks, SJBABBEY, but naim seems to want the format host \ share. And its green, it's active - but "There are no shares currently online".

Is my UnitiServe broken? Well, Phil, I'll have to give you a call tomorrow...

Ok - now you made me take my laptop out

When using an n-Serve for Mac app:

Maintenance > Network Shares

If you've created a folder and it's visible (e.g. uservebackup) it first should be:

Online
Active = Yes
Ignore = None

With those parameters, if you click on that Share, there is a row of buttons on a right-hand side. One of them should say 'Use as backup'.

If it works, the status will change to Active = No

Thank you very much, Adam, everything here as you say:

Online
Active = Yes
Ignore = None

...but the button "Use as Backup" is greyed out!

I think my UnitiServe just doesn't like backups... (I can access the uservebackup from the Mac, but only using afp://syno1.local. However, using Go - ConnectToServer does not work).

Anyway, nice to have so much support, - at least I feel less stupid now! Either my UnitiServe really doesn't like Backups, or the problem is with the Synology folder: it's not clear why the UnitiServe didn't see the folder in the first place.

Good night and thanks everybody!

Is the Network Share you want to use as a backup completely empty?

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Good point Chris!

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by Stefan Vogt

Completely empty, thanks. I did copy a file there, just to see if it works, but removed it later. And that "There are no shares currently online" came up even before I copied that file. Thanks anyway, Chrissu!

There is something with that folder - how it's been created or it has some files.

Go to:

http://support.naimaudio.com

Knowledge base > Hardisk players, servers

you will find a manual how to set up a Synology with a Unitiserve

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by Stefan Vogt

Thanks, Adam, found the manual!

Actually, I had done all this. Still no luck.

After some sleep, I removed the Network Share, and now the US finds it automatically. I could easily promote it to a MusicStore (and found folders HQ, MQ, LQ) and revert to NetworkShare, but once more the US does not allow to use it as MusicBackup (yes, I've deleted those 3 folders again). When the NetworkShare is NOT activated, I can press "Use as Backup" (and nothing happens), and when it's activated, then "Use as Backup" is greyed out. Makes me wonder if my second-hand UnitiServe doesn't like backups?

Posted on: 27 September 2016 by ChrisSU

I wonder if the share is really empty? Sometimes when you delete  a file the folder still has some invisible stuff lurking in it, so maybe worth deleting it and creating a new network store.

Setting up a nas as a backup to a Unitiserve is one of the most challenging and annoying things I've ever had to do. That was three years ago and people are still struggling with the same issues today. I'm surprised that people still buy the thing, and that Naim still make it. The best thing I ever did was get shot of mine. I bought a new Qnap recently and setting a backup to a USB drive took about 10 seconds. Stefan, rather than struggling, get in touch with Phil Harris and he will help you.

Posted on: 28 September 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Well  - it took me 10 seconds to set up a back up folder on my QNAP for use wiht a UnitiServe. And it worked right away.

So I suspect it's not really to do with a UnitiServe, but perhaps a peculiarity of a Synology NAS? (just speculating)

Make sure that the shared folder on the Synology was not created with the option of a recycle bin

Posted on: 28 September 2016 by Stefan Vogt

Thanks, folks, I've create a new folder: still no luck: this is automatically shown as network share, but when I activate it, then the option to use it as backup drive vanishes, as before. I can use it as MusicStore, though. I've emailed Phil...

Posted on: 28 September 2016 by ChrisSU

I seem to remember hitting the same brick wall when I set this up a year or so ago, and I can't remember what the solution was, other than that it was blindingly obvious what I had done wrong once I'd figured it out!

Hi,

As discussed by email I'll set it up for you when you get home but it looks like you're getting a bit confused anyway ... if you activate a folder as a share then it's used as a source for downloaded music and can't be used as a backup location at the same time.

If you set it as a store then the serve will create a folder structure in it which means that it's no longer empty which again prevents it then being set as a backup location (the folder must be empty).

Also, if you have a Mac and you browse into the folder with the Mac before setting it as a backup (or to delete the contents so you can make it a backup) then OSX will leave it's little crumb-trail of hidden files and folders which again mean that the folder isn't empty (although from the Mac it will appear to be) so again you won't be able to set it as a backup location.

It's always easier to use the n-Serve application on your Mac (or Desktop Client on Windows) to set up serves anyway and that's what I'll be using later.

Cheers

Phil

A big THANK YOU to Phil for your help this afternoon and evening! It was more gripping than any movie to watch how Phil whizzed around on my Mac and even got into the UnitiServe Windows and file system. Thank you for reinstalling everything!

I guess my earlier mistakes were one or more of...

- setting up my own account on the Synology (only admin and guest is needed)

- I might not have confirmed changed settings on the Synology, oh well...

- I did not update the Synology OS from 6.02 to 6.02 update,

- there might have been a guest password created which we don't want (no idea how this came about, and not clear if it was really there, but it shouldn't be)

- It looks, also from Phil's note above, that a Network Share needs to be non-active before it can be used as a Backup store: surprise, surprise! I think we assumed the opposite earlier in this thread.

(I was, however, aware that the to-be backup folder must be empty, that the MacOS can leave hidden files, that opening a MusicStore creates HQ, MQ and LQ folders, and that a folder can be EITHER BackupShare OR MusicStore).

Again, a BIG THANK YOU to Phil for excellent, humorous, and swift service!

Awww thanks Stefan...

...just sorry that the internet Gods were plotting against me and I got dumped offline from home or I'd have had you finished last night rather than having to mop the last bits up from the office this morning - obviously I didn't have the sheep lined up right in the field last night (or maybe I just hadn't wetted them down enough) as my internet kept dropping out!

I'm awaiting delivery of a Synology and will be then embarking on this process, with considerable trepidation. However I've downloaded the guide so…

One question - can the Synology be used for other backups - like Time Machine - once it is set up to back up a US?

Posted on: 29 September 2016 by Phil Harris

Hi Richard,

It is pretty straightforward and usually doesn't take long as a straight setup - it's just when there are other files to be copied around and music to be copied from odd drives that has been backed up manually that takes additional time and messing...
