Naim iPhone app question

Posted by: Jay on 28 September 2016

Is there a way to get back to the "root" of a uPnP server quickly rather than backing back through album, artist, etc? Perhaps there's some kind of short cut you can use?

It's not the end of the world but I'm beginning to find it a little painful.

I just back out with one click into the album screen and then scroll through until I find what I want. This has the advantage that I am reminded of albums I forgot I have and if you want to move quickly to the album you want you can jump to the relevant letter of the alphabet.

best

In a word, no.

I guess it would depend on the file structure of your stored music, which could possibly be simplified? I find the number of steps back on my Unitiserve to relatively few, compared to my Synology NAS using Minim. This plays from the Unitiserve's automated backup folder and for some reason, it requires paging through many more sub-folders than the US, which is mildly annoying. Maybe I could tidy it up, but as it's primary function is just a backup for me, I'm not inclined to tinker with it.

Thanks all.

I'm using Minim on a QNAP, so yes, I recognise a similar operating scenario CHRISU. I suppose everyone's organised their libraries differently but a hot key back to the server "root" would be very useful. I see that the app was updated yesterday so you never know, some new developments might be considered by Naim.

Jay, it seems that you are intent on accessing your music using what's called a "Folder View," rather than using a metadata-based system where the albums are cross-referenced by Artist, Genre, Date, etc etc etc.

With the Naim App and a Naim Server, the folder view isn't even possible I'm pretty sure; it's all organized by the metadata.

Other servers do support a folder view.  It's all server-specific.

I think whether folder view works depends on the UPnP server, not the Naim app or streamer: When I used an ND5XS and Naim App, i could browse by folders (my preferred approach) on my original NAS with Logitech Media Server, and same later when using a Mac Mini as NAS with Serviio UPnP server.

Hi Bart

I don't use the dedicated folder view, just the usual artist, album, etc.

Then what is the root directory you're asking about?  Sorry...not quite sure what you want to do.

Don't worrry Bart, we've determined that there isn't a hidden feature.  I used the term "root" (in quotes) to describe the list of selections after you've chosen the server, in my case minimserver(qnap).

+1 to feeling this (a quick link to the "home" or "root" of a UPnP server) is something which would be worthwhile for Naim to add.

Agreed....along with a back button for when you accidentally select a track, thereby deleting your entire play queue.

A home button is never a bad idea. The question is what is home? If it's the front page and you tap in uPnP or Radio you just go back to where you were browsing before you hit home.

It is different for all. For me it's albums - artists - index top view and search/filter options - UpnP servers. Navigating backwards takes less time than it takes to describe it.  "Painful" doesn't apply in my case, I am relieved to say. But then again, we all have different pain thresholds. Maybe use the other hand if tendonitis, arthritis, or something is causing pain?

Helen has a lot of hand pain problems and weakness in one hand, but she gets on fine with an iDevice. She tends to put it on a flat surface to use it, as opposed to holding it.

I was hospitalised only last weekend Harry...

I hope you are on the mend.

I have missed this already, too. It would be great if the current folder name was displayed somewhere (I think it is, isn't it?) and on a long touch on its name the navigation folder should pop up as a select box. So you can easily jump to every folder that you came from, including the absolute root if you want to change the UPNP server.

Sorry Harry, I've just seen your reply. That was a poor quality joke from me, sorry for the mis-understanding.

Ah right!

Not to worry
