The cost of transfering an LP to digital!

Posted by: Blueknowz on 20 July 2011

I was in my local chemist today, whilst waiting for my prescription I picked up a leaflet to read.

Here is a list of some of the prices.

Vinyl 12" or 10"     £10 per side

          "          7" EP £6   "     "

          7" 45s          £4   "     "

Vinyl  16" Transcription discs £16 per side.

 Cassette transfers are similarly priced.

Seems rather expensive to me

Very expensive

If it were for transfer digital to LP then that would be different.

I guess it takes time to as you have to play the record to record it to hard disk and then use something to split up the tracks like Audacity. Additionally, perhaps the service would include using a Keith Monks RCM or equivalent to ensure the record was perfectly clean and he'd use a LP12SE Radikal/Ekos SE/Arkiva with Urika or Super-Caped Super-Line to play it back in to the recorder.

The cassette would of course be played back with the correct bias, azimuth and equalisation on a Nakamichi Dragon

That's ludicrous, especially when you just know it's going to be from a crappy turntable to mp3!

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Let's say it takes 5 minutes to set it up and check levels etc,  40 mins to play the album into the computer, then another 15 mins to split up tracks and normalise/maximise levels for CD (if required)... £20 doesn't sound so bad for all that work. I wouldn't do it for less than that, to be honest, unless someone wanted me to do a big collection of vinyl.

Of course it's expensive if it's being done with one of those £50 USB decks that turns em into MP3's!!! Then it's daylight robbery!

You wouldn't expect anyone at Boots to have a £5k turntable and a 24-bit recorder, would you?

Well quite.

I had a friend buy one of those TTs with digital out.  He got so frustrated with the naming conventions and having to file ten with similar numbers he just gave up.  Very tedious adventure.
