Naim and Sopra 2
Posted by: BPou on 30 September 2016
Hi all, I am new to Naim. I am looking for an Amp and Pre that match well with my Sopra No. 2. I have been checking the reviews and it looks that a combination of 282/300DR would work well. Also intrigued with the 272/300DR since I do a lot of streaming from Tidal. I am currently using an AVM SA 3.2 (Amp) with and Marantz 8802 processor.
I welcome your suggestions for a new system. Thanks in advance,

You'd be in an aural heaven.
Just make sure you don't waste such a fine system on Tidal.
I put a deposit down on precisely that system last week (plus full Fraim)
Cannot wait for it to arrive.
- XPSDR will sound a bit rough to start with - again up to 8 weeks run-in time may be expected
Agree about xpsdr sounding abit rough from the off, mine was very slow to get going, I wasnt aware it would need 8 weeks.....thats interesting, I've got a good while to go with mine then...

Based on your inputs I will try the 272/xdpsdr/300 dr. A good chunk of money,, hoping is a clear improvement over my current setting. I will post my impressions when I get it, probably in two weeks.
Once it arrives, stream from the nas over the network to the 272, keeping the Marantz out of the loop. This may well be what you are planning already. Connect the nas and the 272 to a switch, and the switch to the router. This keeps the stereo away from other network traffic.
Thanks for the suggestion. I currently use the Marantz with two amplifiers: one for music (AVM - A), and one multi channel for movies (Outlaw 5 - B) in a A/B configuration/switch. I have to keep to computer connected to the Marantz via HDMI because I frequently stream AV from Medici, RCO, Digital Concert Hall and Youtube. Mi plan is to connect the NAS to the 272 and streaming Tidal via Ethernet. I also have an Audiophilleo 2 that I can use to connect the computer to the 272 via SPIDF since the 272 does not have USB connection, but probably no necessary because the ethernet connection.
I have some multi channel music too, definitely these have to go through the Marantz. I am all digital and streaming, no physical media. I had ripped my completed CD collection to FLAC and only buy digital.
I reached out to my dealer. The 300DR is on its way, the 272 in on back order.

I based it on my two experiences with 555 - perhaps XPS will burn it quicker.
555PSDR took almost two months to settle down from new.
555 - used one - took 2-3 weeks to settle into my system, despite being 7 years old.

Agreed, this is a superb system. By the way, recently I am getting some great sounds via full fat Tidal which, for me, is getting a little closer to the SQ of locally streamed hi res files. It is not there yet but very listenable and a huge catalog for instant discovery.
Sorry for the slight diversion but Tidal appears to being doing justice as a secondary source for such a fine system IMHO.
I've heard Sopras being driven by a 250DR and whilst this sounded great it did, IMHO, struggle on some material at louder volumes. It depends upon the size of your room and volume preferences but I would reckon (as advised above) that the extra 'whack' from a 300DR would be worth the investment.

I agree, Tidal sound quality is really very close to locally streamed CD quality. There are other things I dislike about it, like the higher price in the UK than in any other country, and limited selection in some genres of music, but still, it sounds pretty good to me.
