Recommendation On Music With Similar Style As "Everything But The Girl"
Posted by: ryder. on 02 October 2016
Thanks to King Size, I have discovered Everything But The Girl. Great tunes especially the more laid back ones. Some of my favourite songs include Cross My Heart, Mirrorball, Alfie, Letting Love Go just to name a few. Other catchy tunes that I enjoy include Take Me, No Difference, Before Today(Chicane remix) and Downhill Racer.
Any recommendation on artists or music with similar style would be most appreciated.
Both Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt (the husband and wife duo that are EBTG) have recorded their own solo material. You might find it interesting to explore these.
I've been a fan of EBTG since the start when I saw them play at Southampton Uni around the time they released their first album Eden. I'm interested to see what others suggest too.
Glad you found something you liked in the list and you've mentioned some great tracks there. Graham is right that Ben and Tracey's solo stuff is worth exploring. Not sure I have much more to recommend but do have a listen to 'The Paris Match' on The Style Council's "Cafe Bleu" album.
I'll pop back if I can think of anything else.
Tracey released an excellent compilation of solo stuff and collaborations earlier this year, which includes her wonderful work with Massive Attack and many others. She also wrote a really fine book - Bedsit Disco Queen, which is well worth reading. I absolutely love their stuff, but am stumped as to who is like them, as their music is so diverse, spanning genres such as jazz and drum and bass.
Yes, a great band indeed. You can buy five of their albums as a CD box set on the Original Album Series for less than a tenner on Amazon.
Thanks for all responses.
Tony, I am currently listening to EBTG on FLAC, direct stream from computer to QBD76. This quality of these FLAC files is some of the best I have experienced so far. Sublime sound quality and stellar music. Will investigate the box set.
Cheers.
I've got a few things of theirs, which might help.

I'm also a long-time fan. Definitely also check out Massive Attack. But I'm the same as HH struggling to put them in a group with similar artists. Maybe you'd like Beth Orton, but she's a bit more folky for the most part?

I thought I was a fan, but I only have 7 of those. I have some catching up to do!
Beth Orton?
Natalie Merchant?
Best I can think of (and not that close either). Definitely recommend the solo work of Thorn and Watt. His first solo album 'Hendra' I think is particularly good. Without her voice though not sure you'd realise he was half of EBTG.

Try 'The Lovely' by Mara Carlyle... (Everyone should hear her song 'I Blame You Not' at least once in their lifetime.)
Otherwise maybe some stuff by Lamb - see if the song 'Gabriel' does it for you?
Winky - a lot of them are EPs, so don't fret too much! The Acoustic album is well worth getting, and includes the Covers EP. That, along with the marvellous Missing EP are some of my favourites. I remember driving around in Italy in the summer the Todd Terry remix was released and it was on the radio all the time, and was a massive hit way before it took off in the UK following its re-release some months later.
We saw Ben Watt recently and he sang Rollercoaster from the piano. Originally sung by Tracey, it was written by Ben as a reaction to his illness, and it was so moving when sung by him in a small venue with him about ten yards away. Marvellous. I've loved their stuff since the early 80s, and it's lovely that they are both making such good music today.
I propose River City People.
Don't know how correct I am, but it is an excuse to post a couple of RCP tracks.
I really like 'The Sundays' and are probably close enough to EBTG to warrant inclusion. Check out "Reading, Writing And Arithmetic".

Good call Fatcat! I reckon they were a great band, sorely underrated.
