Dear Forum members,

Today we announce our most revolutionary streaming platform yet. Inspired by our unfaltering passion for music and enabled by more than 40 years' of tireless innovation, we introduce the new Uniti range. Comprising the Uniti Nova, Uniti Star and Uniti Atom all-in-one players and the Uniti Core hard disk server, Uniti's brand new state-of-the-art technology enables you to experience music like never before. Rip and store entire collections, play or stream music from any source, at the touch of a button, all with the deep, immersive sound only a Naim system delivers.

Our Research and Development team in Salisbury had to fundamentally deconstruct every historic design and technology decision we had ever made to challenge themselves and go further, especially in terms of sound quality. It’s a true ground-up development, all hand-built in Salisbury, with our core principles at its heart. We looked at every single aspect of the product proposition, the electronic architecture, the mechanical enclosure, the user experience and the approach to manufacture and assembly.

The result? A clear step change in every single aspect of the products, a true achievement of excellence. We hope you enjoy this exciting new product range and look forward to hearing what you think.

Discover Uniti: https://www.naimaudio.com/uniti

Best wishes

Naim

[Edited: 13.01.2017]

The new Uniti range is our biggest release in over fifteen years and we are really proud of all the work that has gone into crafting this revolutionary new product range. Due to the technical complexity of Uniti we have faced more challenges than we initially anticipated and we still have some features to refine to ensure the products that reach you are of the highest possible quality.

We are currently processing certifications for AirPlay, GoogleCast, TIDAL, Bluetooth (aptX HD), WiFi, HDMI and Spotify Connect  and beta testing our latest software; the team is working extremely hard to ensure that the products stand up to the level of quality you have come to expect from Naim.

As such we have made the difficult decision to delay shipping Uniti Atom until May with Uniti Star and Uniti Nova following in June.

We have been reviewing all customer feedback from the Uniti Core servers shipped in 2016, and made the decision to stop shipping after Christmas, to ensure we have fixed any software issues before shipping en masse. We are expecting a firmware update next week, and an over-the-air update will be available via the app for those who have already received their Uniti Core servers.  Shipping will re-commence next week as soon as the firmware is available and tested.

We know the delay is frustrating and sincerely apologise for it. Thank you for your continued support and patience while we put the finishing touches on your Uniti.

Afternoon all

i need your help to make a big decision.

i am going to part exchange my qute2 for the atom or the star. Box unopened because of an imminent house move. Speaker kef ls50

Questions:

1. Is it worth getting the atom with HDMI?

2. Star is significantly more expensive. Beside watts and cd part, any other advantage to the star?

3. Atom is within my means and I can buy a core potentially in 1-2 years (not convinced it is needed if I can use a USB or hardrive)...it just feels right but just having second thoughts on the star !!!!

4. Anyone heard the atom? Or star? . I found some reviews and apparently it was driving focal supra high end speakers...

thank you in advance for any help you can give. Not interested in previous discussion type about focal speakers. Genuinely needing help based on my present configuration

Phew! Back on topic....

For all we know, the new Unitis might have quite a different sound from the current ones, maybe better, or maybe, to some people's taste, worse. Best to forget all about them until they hit the shops, then go and listen using your own speakers.

Answers to your questions in order:

1. I have the Uniti 2 and it plays sound from a TV through the system in perfect synch with the image using an optical input. If your TV does not have an optical out then the HDMI would be the way to achieve this, otherwise it may be overkill - though does allow you to control the Atom volume with the TV  remote

2. Would give a wider range of potential speakers you could use and 'should ' sound better but you need to listen for yourself. I listened to the Qute and Uniti 2 from the old Uniti range, and the Uniti 2 gave me the better control and power I was looking for in my system

Can't help with the other 2 questions sorry, as I haven't heard any of the new range

Posted on: 22 October 2016 by Crabby

Thank you both for taking the time to reply. You are both right

I am however not as fussy as most people. I like the naim sound in general.  I also like other brands.

I have an opportunity to exchange my qute2 new with virtually no loss and I will not miss it. For most, it is crazy without listening but I am banking on the naim sound pedigree, the atom littke extra power for my hungry kEf plus the whole new streaming architecture and interface. Possible it will trickle down soon to my qute2 but hardware will always have limitations.

Things are moving fast and unless you invest in a good dac, hard to keep up.

The star is lovely indeed and I should buy it. However, I don't have the cash now unless I go Negative and i am not convinced about the cd transport and ripping side (Thats why I got the qute instead of the lite in the first place). If I change my mind, I will be buying the core in 1-2 years depending on cash availability and prices. That's the beauty of the atom for me, like the qute2 may I say.

keep well

You are welcome - the Atom looks like a great little package and I'm looking forward to hearing some of the Uniti range once they all come out.

IMHO that [Uniti by Focal speakers] would be dreadful. Focal are Naim's partner in the V something group, but they are not Naim. I'm convinced that if Naim and Focal were not partnered, the apparent enthusiasm for the French bling boxes amongst Naim owners would be infinitely less.

Regardless of the match in terms of sound quality; Focal is now the company linked to Naim who make speakers. If Naim are looking for a speaker partner so that they can sell a complete Uniti system then Focal would be the natural partner commercially.  And if Naim want the Uniti to be sold outside of specialist HiFi dealers (which they might not want admittedly) then recommended packages would be required.

(But a subject for another topic perhaps)

Dear Crabby -

I haven't heard any of the new Uniti series, of course, but I understand your thinking: upgrading without cost or penalty from "the last" of the UnitiQute2s to "the first" of the UnitiAtoms makes a compelling argument. New streaming platform, more powerful DSP, over the air firmware upgrades, new "trickle down" technology for amp and preamp volume control, etc., all seem like things worth having ... So much so that folks like me, with older Uniti boxes (I have a v1 Qute and a SuperUniti) are eager to see what the new line brings, and at what price a "modernization upgrade" might come. I have complete faith in the Naim engineers to build a new product that sounds at least as good as the generation being replaced...enough so that if I could do a straight swap of my old Qute for a new Atom, I'd jump in a heartbeat haha. Best wishes whichever way you decide to go.

Thats a very nice message from you. I spent the night reading about it and there is no doubt in my mind anymore. The new uniti range is improved at many levels

The new proposition is irresistible for me. Atom first then core later potentially

thanks again

Just my 2p worth, and I have no wish to become embroiled in this "winning the argument" silliness.

I Do wish to win the argument! All Focal speakers are RUBBISH!

Or am in thinking of all Spendor speakers? Mission?

Nah, forget I said anything.

the main FOCUS for naim will that the new range will be their main focus and open up their dealer ship to any large store in the country.  They certainly look like the new statement/muso look for the future. My ndx looks old school design

Posted on: 23 October 2016 by Penarth Blues

I'm not sure if I've missed it somewhere in the thread, but have Naim proposed how the new range should be set up in terms of isolation? The top mounted control means it will need to sit on the top of something, but a Fraim seems unlikely to be the recommended solution to get it up to a useable height. I wonder if they'll propose some form of new support?

My Uniti2 is currently located on a normal shelf under my TV but I'd be interested in something different to Fraim if it were to become available for the new range

If you plan to use your Uniti with a TV I would suggest getting the HDMI option. While the ARC and CEC features are helpful, I would suggest it's also important for future proofing as not all TVs come with optical S/PDIF connections these days. Over time I expect this trend to continue. My rationale is based on the assumption that you will likely keep your new Uniti, longer than your TV.

PB, I can't speak for Naim here but as this is Uniti, and hence a one-box solution then I think that the vast majority won't be using it on a Fraim, or even on a dedicated hifi rack.  More likely it will be sited in or on top of a cabinet, cupboard, sideboard, table, plinth or something similar.

Of course, a dedicated Fraim would be great - how about a base and an extended leg level or maybe a base and two intermediate levels to get it up to a better height? Nice, but considering the cost, an unlikely choice.

My SuperUniti sits on my home-office desk and if I'm stuck for inspiration, I gaze at that lovely green Naim logo while my mind wanders free.... No doubt if I swap the SU for a Nova some time, it will need to go in the same place.

I see your point indeed. I however don't believe the digital out will disappear anytime soon from Tvs especially top ones.

The real issue however is availability of HDMI in general and arc in particular. You lucky to have 4 today and just one with arc. Usually it goes into a soundbar or a UHD blu Ray player. That's why I don't believe I need it.

I could be wrong. Hence why between you and me I am considering the star too now as HDMI is standard. For atom, I may just bite the bullet not to regret later...difficult choice as my current old tv has 2 digital out.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, Appreciated.

Over the years, in regard to almost anything, (including an ND5-XS where the trade in value was significantly lower than I had expected because it didn't have the optional tuner module), I have often later regretted saving money by buying a less than top-specified unit.  So I would go for the HDMI option on the Atom whether I could see the immediate need or not.

Thanks for the reply Richard - I sort of assumed that would be the case, but as I currently put my Uniti2 on a shelf on my TV stand then I'm faced with having to find somewhere else to put a new Uniti model if I were to buy it.

As it wasn't immediately obvious where this would be in my case, then I wondered if Naim/Focal had addressed this issue and might have a solution in the pipeline. No big issue as I'm very happy my Uniti2 at present, but more curiosity that there may be a new support method on its way.

I think you are correct about the unlikeliness of a Fraim being the solution...

Hi all. New to the forum and very interested in the new range. I have my eye on the Atom.

Currently I am running a 5.1 set up with an Anthem MRX300 av receiver, Focal Chorus 714 fronts, Focal Chorus CC700v centre and B&W M1 rears and a BK XXLS400DF sub.

Does the HDMI option needs to be added to the Atom straight at purchase or can I ugrade it in the future as well (not sure if this would incur more costs)?

One other question I have is whether I would be able to use the Atom with the speakers for music and TV and use the Anthem just for the 5.1 set up? I mean independently without having to turn both on at the same time?

I would imagine it would be prohibitively expensive to put the HDMI in later, so I guess this is a one-time decision

On your second point, I'd imagine you'd be running the HDMI Arc link into the Anthem, and either another HDMI or an Optical link into the Atom. I don't have a 5.1 setup so can't advise further on whether this would work but can't think why it wouldn't.

The lack of support for Tidal, Spotify and other internet streaming services on the Core is disappointing and, frankly speaking, mildly unfair. With an high quality BNC connector, the Core could be an ideal source for s/pdif DACs, in particular for Naim DACs. Many Naim DAC owners have been waiting for a Naim source like the Core for years. Now we have it, but with impaired functionalities. Very sad and, for me, hardly understandable.

Hi nbpf,

Core is a ripper / storage / server device - and is not designed as a streamer so it doesn't have streaming service functionality.

I understand that you have your own requirements of what you want products to do and how you want them to be but those may not be commercially practical.

You say that Naim DAC owners have been waiting for a source like Core but in what way did UnitiServe / NS / HDX not do that role? The ND5XS and NDX streamers have had S/PDIF outputs since they were introduced and the Naim DAC has always been listed as an upgrade for those units.

If you are wanting a standalone ripper / storage device / server / streamer with S/PDIF output for an external DAC then that device would not exist within the Uniti line as that would not be a Uniti product - the Uniti Atom / Star and Nova are intended to be standalone products that just require power, speakers and a network connection to be able to work. Core is the ripper and server that is intended to feed those products.

:-)

Yeah, mine don't work either Jon ... aren't they just awful.

At the end of the day, speakers are a hugely subjective choice as well as being incredibly room dependent too. What works well in one room may not work at all in another and what one person finds aesthetically appealing someone else will hate.

Now, group hug and lets all be nice to each other again...
