SBL cabinets, what is a suitable product to use to restore the finish?.

Hi Forum members.

I am using a pre owned set of MK2 SBL speakers that are in a beech finish, I am saying pre owned rather than pre loved as at one point someone has tried to rub down the cabinets in a few areas ??. This has made the finish much lighter, as the top coat  of varnish or laquer has been removed, The veneer is in a good condition in the rubbed down areas. I did try a beech coloured beeswax but the lightly sanded area still stands out.

Any suggestions?

There's nothing you can do if they partially sanded them then sand them completely and paint them again. But this is a job for people who know what they're doing i believe. If the rest is ok i only would try to enjoy them.

Hi Gianluigi.

I agree , best to leave it as it is. It is just because i have noticed it, but to be honest you would have to if pointed out overwise.

I don't think there is a product that will provide a high quality uniform fix to a damaged finish. You aren't certain of the original coating or what was applied by the previous owner, and you've added beeswax to the mix. Dedicated sanding and refinishing of the cabinets is the optimal resort, but that would involve dismantling and removal of the speakers and internals - a time consuming venture and costly if done by a professional.

I've had success using denatured alcohol on a super-fine synthetic scrub pad followed by this product for the restoring the finish on worn wood molding in my house, but I wouldn't want to get strong solvents near speaker surrounds.

Hi JOERAND.

Thanks for your comments.

I agree that to restore the finish back to a uniform standard ,would take a professional in restoring wood finishing. The cost and time involved would not make sense also.
