CD3 with Flatcap

Posted by: Zook on 07 October 2016

Having recently acquired a NACD3, I'm told it will significantly benefit being paired with a Flatcap.

Any thoughts?

I happen to remeber only CD3.5 could, CD3 was an integrated unit.

I may be wrong, though.

You're right Antonio - the 3.5 could use an external supply unlike the 3. I ran my (3.5) with a Flat cap and found it didn't add that much. The 3.5 was a nice player on it's own. Although the visual match is better with the Flat cap, i suspect you'd get better performance adding a Hi-Cap.

Cheers for replies fellas, just it has a link plug for when using without a PS at the rear, plugged into the link socket and blocking the Aux PS socket.

Any thoughts?

Yup, that's a CD3.5 - it remained labelled up at the rear as a CD3 for a while after the change.  Quite a different machine inside and, for the small price of a secondhand flatcap, a nice machine not so far off a CD5/FC.

you sure you read NACD3 on the rear?  looks to me a  NACD3-5 description.

OK happen to notice now,sorted.

Reet, looks like we're onto something here, can't seem to attach a photo of the rear. But I have three plugs to the right, Link, Aux PS and Output. Deffo states CD3 though, which would back up Richard's post.

Cheers for help

I really thought the CD3.5/FC/Nait3(R) was a special little Olive system - looked great, sounded great, and punched WAY above its price and size. Paired with some Credos (or even Intros) and you had one nice setup.

Bought a Flatcap....looking forward to going through the with / without back to back testing lol

Just got to pick the CD's now.....1st up - Walking into Clarkesdale I think

Cheers again.

That little special olive system had been residing with us for the last 16 years. Two FCs,  Proac Response speakers as well as the LP 12 are not seen in the picture.

The CD3/3.5 used to sell exceptionally well. Used to love starting customers off on a CD3.5/Nait3 and sell up to a CD3.5/FC/92/90 on Linn Tukans or Mission 752. Just pure enjoyment.

Before getting the Flatcap consider the age of the units. The mechs used a plastic lense which could be prone to degredation after 10 years. Some are going strong. Others gave up the ghost a while back.

On the other hand, a Flatcap would stand you in good stead for other potential future purchases anyway so the risk is low.

...and a rather nice Luxman tuner too, by the look of things.

I've had CD3.5 twice, last time one year ago for a short period, and I regret having sold it – a really great CD player, full of character and ready to entertain. Not the last word in linearity, but extremely engaging.

I wonder if this isn't a reply to my own latest post.

The unit came from my Father, owned it many years, and had a full service recently by Witch Hat.

New Capacitors, Resistors, Load Driver and Laser Head fitted with 3 day soak test and laser check. Looks decent, going to order a new Puck as the current item's rubber rings look a little flat. Otherwise, should be good to rock. Cracking Saturday ahead of me.

I loved my old CD3.5/FC and preferred this to the CDX I once owned had to add an XPS to the CDX to extend listening periods, enjoy your 3.5 it's a great spinner.

The Luxman tuner (T-450) is even more senior, belonging to a pre-Naim system from 1978.
