Upgraded to CDX2

Posted by: nickfoss on 10 October 2016

A couple of weeks or so ago I asked for advice to upgrade my system ( 5X / 122X / FC2X / 150X & Wilson Benesch Arcs. )

The general view was that the CD player should be upgraded to a CDX2 as a first step with possible future changes being to replace the amps with a Supernait2 or perhaps a 202 / 200 or 250.

Ok so I took the plunge and bought a S/H CDX2 part exchanging my CD5X.

I took delivery today and have only played a couple of cds thus far.

I have to say that the improvement is significant.

Instantly I noticed greater depth , warmth , richness and realism to the music and cannot wait to further explore my large collection of cds.

I don't think I would have paid £4000 for this player but at just £800 to make the change I suspect this might be the best value upgrade that I will ever make.

I think I will live with this system for a few months before considering the next step. Power supply for the CDX or different amps ?

Once again thanks to everyone for their previous assistance.

Enjoy the CDX2!  Forget about changing anything else.

But if/when you do: XPS.

Good move. Just chill.

Hey Nick enjoy your CDX2. Your next upgrade will be the same as mine, an XPSDR!

Without wishing to repeat your original thread, I'd suggest a Supernait 2 next. With the 150, the Arcs are still slumbering. A bigger amp will give them the get up and go they need, and the 122/150 won't show the full benefit of an XPS. IMHO naturally.

I agree with HH - a SN2 will really drive those Arcs.   Otherwise enjoy the CDX2!

+1 the xps and even the combination with the ndac form significant upgrades, but first enjoy. The CDX has a very special sound, just enjoy it.

A while back I bought an ex-demo CDX2 to play CDs with my Unitiserve/272/XPS2DR/250DR because I have a personal antipathy to ripping CDs I don't own, but I love using it with CDs I do own too. It sounds more analogue and relaxed somehow, not much but a bit,-so great to listen to and I also love the opening the door, lifting the puck, placing the CD carefully, replacing the puck, closing the door theatre.

I'm sure you early impressions will be confirmed.

best

You're not the first person to make that kind of comment David.  But I'm wondering why?  Is it because the DAC stage is superior to that in the 272 os something to do with the data coming of the Uniti Serve and its transmission to the 272?

Lindsay

I suspect it is just the power of suggestion, if I'm honest. Sometime I must try feeding it into the 272 as a digital stream and see which DAC I prefer. But I don't feel any urgency to do that.

Have you tried the XPS on the Cdx2 yet?

Posted on: 10 October 2016 by David Hendon

No it has an ongoing and synergistic relationship with the 272 and I don't like to come between them. (Also it took absolutely ages to line the Burndy up right to make it mate the CDX2 and I can't be bothered to go through that again!)

I remember the moment I switched my CDX2 on with the XPS2...........

Posted on: 10 October 2016 by David Hendon

Don't tell me. It was love at first hear.....

I am a bit concerned that I don't get myself into the position where I need to buy a second XPS....

I'm very interested to this thread, since I have same system (but with Harbeth speakers).

With CDX 2, what about a combo nap122x - nap200 ? or is it just a mid-step forward?

I knew positive feedback about it...

Ok , I've just had an extended listen.

What a joy this cd player is.

On modern recordings such as Bonobo - The North Border I was hearing things I have never heard before.

With Lianne Le Havas and Zara McFarlane every note was faultless and even the inhalation of breath was audible and felt.

My wife who has no interest whatsoever in hifi even commented that it was just like being at a gig.

On older recordings like Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain  there was a definite improvement in the overall pesentation of sound but less marked .

When I played Love and Affection by Joan Armatrading it was like being transported back 30 years to when I listed to the vinyl recording on my gorgeous Micro Seiki DD40 with SME arm and ( I think ) Ortofon MC40 - wish I still had that bit of kit.

I think my first impressions were correct ( it is rich , warm , realistic and has greater depth ) but in addition the CDX2 is involving , allowing you as the listener to feel as though you are participating. It also feels like fun and I'm not sure how you can describe a piece of electronics in that way but it is the best way I can sum it up.

So once again thanks to everyone for the initial recommendation .

I am indeed going to enjoy the experience of rediscovering my cds before I get upgradeitis again.

+1, the system would be much better balanced. Oh, and a HiLine should be considered asap if you haven't already got one. Christmas?

Oh and the beauty of the Supernait? All the empty shelves you can fill!

I'm going to take some time to enjoy but will then demo my speakers and CDX2 with a SN2 ( as per Hungryhalibut's suggestion ) and a 202 and 250 before I decide how to proceed.

I must confess that if I swopped 3 boxes for the SN2 I would have 2 spare shelves for an XPS later down the line and that is an attractive ( though expensive ) thought.

Don't think about a 202 and 250, it's a bad combination. If you want better than the SN2 it's a 282/200 you should look at. The SN2 is the place to start.

CDX2 works very nicely with a SN2. No stress over an XPS2, yes it's better, but still great music without.
