OMG moments with 250DR

Posted by: Allan Milne on 11 October 2016

In a previous post I said I don't do OMG moments - I just have great big smiles instead.

I've read a few posts lately with OMG (particularly the 552 comments) and thought, 'oh yeah, right'.

... well I've just had 2 OMG moments with my 250DR (now well run in) playing from my UnitiServ

I was reading some forum stuff on here with the system playing in the background (but still loudish) and I had to stop and just listen ...

... OMG, that is just incredible ...

The music was Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue played by Leonard Bernstein and the LA Philharmonic ...

OMG ... this piece has all come together with emotion, clarity and substance.

I had enjoyed this piece but now somehow it all made sense with the piano and orchestra in total harmony.

IMO thepiano is the best instrument to show off upgrade improvements (that and the human voice) and with the 250DR I can now hear the melodic line the pianist is playing, rather than all the 10 fingers hitting notes (beautiful as that might be) I can now hear that one line that the other notes are supporting.

Along with this the orchestra is now, contradictory, both more distinct and more together

The other OMG moment I had this afternoon was Lou Reed's Walk On The Wild Side from his Transformer album ...

those "coloured girls" started their do ti do as normal in the back and came forword ... and came forward ... and came forward ... right out of the speakers !

and then of course their is that magic stand-up bass playing that is now so clear along with every instrument and voice

... just exceptional, the stand-out track of this album IMO, and I think every track is great..

so a couple of OMG moments and a huge smile all afternoon ... you can't put a price on that,

thank you 250DR.

Listening to Bluesamericana on Tidal now. Just bought the album mentioned above for less than £4 on Amazon - there are used copies for as little as £1.21!!

A true sign of a great system playing great music to an appreciative listener.

It sure is. Walk on the Wild Side will be the first track played when my NAC-N 272 is powered by the 555PS that's due to arrive later this week. Should be even more stunning.

... and it just keeps giving

... I hear something new almost every time I play it, that sax is pleasing me at the moment.

Let us know how that PS  works - you might need a whole box of tissues

Right now I'm sitting upstairs with Product Detailsplaying downstairs and I just couldn't start to articulate how utterly sublime it is.

It's the same for me. I've been gradually working my way through my music collection since I bought my 272/ 250 and a lot of the time it sounds like the musicians are performing in my living room.

I was worried when I bought the 555PS that it might be a "downstream" upgrade too far for my record player, but the music sounds amazing right now. So I think my concern is unfounded.

I had another 'wow' moment today - listening to Santana IV.

Whilst selecting an album, I couldn't be bothered to find an iPad, so used a remote instead. That meant I was good meter closer to the speakers than usual. What came out and how I heard the music was just.... jaw dropping. I'm sure there is a dent in the floor somewhere...

Since I didn't want to move my speakers into the middle of the room, I just moved my chair closer - haaaaapppppyyyy bunnnnny!!!

Thank you NAP250!

The wonderful thing about Tidal is you can see something and try it out instantly. So I am listening to Ms Frang's Mozart right now with the help of my 250DR.

Nice one Strat - absolutely glorious.

Currently listening to Parallel Lines by Blondie. My 250 is showing that Clem Burke is an awesome drummer. He really drives the songs along.

I've had a great afternoon playing records.

The ultimate manifestation of a forum of this type - being able to exploit the best music.

Just put into service mine, first samples: Leonard Cohen "Nevermind" from "Popular problems" and "Man from U.N.C.L.E." soundtrack.

Everything is super controlled and loaded with bags of new details after my NAP200. Goosebumps are in order that's for sure.

Hi Julius,

The same response that I had ... great isn't it

... and by the way this is in no way a criticism of the 200, it was great at the time too.

Hi Allan, absolutely!

Regarding Rhapsody in blue, have you ever had the chance to listen to the Ivan Davis/Cleveland Orchestra/Lorin Maazel version on Decca from the mid-70s?

Another goosebump-maker, IMO!!!

Afternoon Allan,

Here's another one for your ever expanding Christmas list.

The Beat - I Just Can't Stop It.

Quite the best of British 2Tone / Ska............doesn't matter whether you really care for ska or not, this is just such a happy uplifting album..................it's playing here at the moment, to banish those gloomy wet North Yorks. blues...............you'll love it!

Dave.

Hi Dave,

It is a beautiful sunny day here  - the sun always shines on the righteous

Never heard this before but always willing to give something new a try ... Xmas list will probably last for  a few years birthdays and Xmases !

Will be taking up Amazon's kind offer of a month's free trial of Amazon prime shortly in time for Xmas shopping and will perhaps give this a test play over my Sonus then ... yes, everything you've heard about Scotsmen's pockets is correct

I've resisted posting on this thread so far, basically as I couldn't really think of anything to add... But it would be remiss of me not to pass on my gratitude at the recommendation of the Keb' Mo' album, which I picked up for £1.50 and is really very good indeed, though blues is not really my thing. I've also ordered the Vilde Frang Mozart, having been aware of her but never having investigated further.

The ability to have great music in the house, played on a really good stereo, is a great luxury and a privilege it's easy to forget when there is no much trouble in the world. I've had my obligatory afternoon nap and am listening to a new recording by the always excellent Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque, playing Bach's Art of Fugue in the 24bit 192k version and the sound is just lovely, especially now my right ear is starting to work.

It's great to see The Beat mentioned here, such an upbeat album despite the darker subject matter in a lot of the songs, very much a positive protest, and one that reminds me so clearly of my first couple of years at Uni when I did a spot behind the decks at the local pub disco on Anglesey and received payment in pints of mild. It's amazing how music can hold such memories.

I've doubtless added nothing anyway, but it's a very good thread that bridges the gap between the Hifi corner and the music room. And I hope someone gets the Rachel Podger album...

Point of pedantry, but the bass on Walk on the Wild Side is electric and actually 2 bass lines, not one. Try playing it and you'll get it. The bassist got twice the fee in the studio for doing it.

Posted on: 18 October 2016 by Allan Milne

Hi Bodger,

Really ! ... I will have to listen again, more carefully this time; I would have sworn it was a stand-up bass closely miked ... is it a fretless electric bass?

Allan

Posted on: 18 October 2016 by Allan Milne

it is these little details that are great and probably would be much harder to distinguish without that good old 250DR

Amazing what folk on this forum know ...

If I'm not mistaken I think there is a stand up bass and an electric bass on that track

Erm...........to be even more pedantic, Herbie Flowers, the (English) bass player, recorded the original part on upright bass, then overdubbed on electric bass guitar, 10 notes above the original...................you're right though, with careful listening you can hear two distinct instruments, and he did get paid twice, all done in twenty minutes.

Sorry!

I picked up on this album too, but now I'm gutted that I spent a whole £2.70 on it! While searching, I found that I could have bought a 24/192 download - oh, actually, I couldn't because it's only available in the US, and it costs $25. There's a thread running at the moment about searching for cheaper HD downloads, but quite frankly, for the difference in price between CDs and Hi-Res downloads you could fund a brand new NDS/555 if you have a reasonable sized collection.

Rant over! Thanks from me, too, for the heads up on Keb' Mo'.
