The Core is a ripper and server.  You could use it with a NAS if you so choose.  More details are available on the "sticky" thread at the top of the page.

NAS simply means network attached storage ... basically a small server dedicated to the storage of files, though these days all kinds of additional services such as UPnP server for music playback can be added. The term NAS is used to differentiate the storage from directly attached (DAS) or connected to a dedicated storage network (or SAN) such as fibre channel.

The Uniti Core is (as Richard stated) a dedicated ripper and storage devices... as it connects to a network it is (by definition) Network Attached Storage, but it's not a general purpose device which is what is usually meant if you talk about a NAS.

It can function as a NAS for music storage, though how well it works saving files to it from anything else on the network someone from Naim will need to clarify.

But it is far more than a NAS: it includes a ripper, for easy CD ripping, and a renderer, so it can output direct to a DAC without a network between.

Well, I want one!

However, does it comes with internal storage or is this added by the user to suit, ie HDD or SSD?

I think - but I'm not sure - that the user can choose the internal storage (HDD or SSD). Probably your friendly dealer will mount the correct disk in the unit.

You will be able to choose your own internal storage I believe Naim will be releasing a list of recommended storage drives shortly will be very interested myself.

Hi Richard,

For the ripper function and result, is it same save EAC and XLD ? (Secure RIP)

OK cool. Thanks.

But in the asking price, is storage included?

No storage is extra.

So if 'no storage' is extra, then storage presumably is included in the price...

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Well that is certainly the case with the Unitiserve! You pay an extra £270 to have no storage.

So the core would serve my ndac with digital out.

Two questions

Would this be a better digital source than a cd5xs?

Could it also serve a Muso / streamer via ethernet in another room?

I'm also curious about CD playback given, I believe, the CD is buffered, as it were, as it's playing. So does this mean it's essentially playing a ripped CD in real-time?
