Plexor Drive Bust - Recs for replacement?

Posted by: DQ on 22 July 2011

Hello all,

I took my Plexor drive across the Atlantic and back and it did not enjoy the trip! It will play CDs but refuses point blank to rip them. Grrr!

Any views on replacement for an external CD drive? I rip with various laptops so no internal drive is possible.

Shame as this was a good bit of kit.

Cheers, David

David, I've found recent Plextors not so good.  I have one that I bought recently at great cost and found disappointing.  Right now I'm using a Freecom external drive that I believe uses a Samsung drive.  It seems to tick all the important ripping boxes and has been totally reliable even after very heavy use.

Richard,

Thanks - mine was a nice old genuine Plextor. The new ones are made by pioneer. I think I may just be able to replace the actual drive and use the existing case.

I will take a look at the Freecom one. Do you have a model #?

Cheers

David, (un)usefully I've looked over the drive and it doesn't seem to have any coherent model number.  The drive itself looks like a Samsung unit with "Writemaster" labelling on the drawer.

Yes, the earlier Plextor CD drives were rather good.  It's just a shame that more recent ones are nowhere near as good.  Running various tests, the Freecom passed easily but the Plextor struggled on a few related to accurate ripping.
