FLAC to WAV Convertions
Posted by: Mike-B on 15 October 2016
I'm struggling with a problem & running out of time today, so hoping a forum'ite has an easy answer. I've just downloaded a FLAC album & found dBpoweramp will not convert it to WAV - or MP3 - so its probably copy protected. Any idea's ????
Mike, will the NDX play it? If it is copy protected (i.e. DRM coded) then the NDX won't be able to play it either.
If the NDX can play it, then it's probably a problem in the metadata - look for anything odd and delete it. If that doesn't work you may need to try removing ALL the metadata and then put back those bits of metadata you actually need.
I had this once with a download from Qobuz. I stripped out every single tag. After doing this I found I was able to convert it to another lossless format (can't remember but I guess it must have been AIFF). I was then able to convert to WAV.
It wouldn't go from FLAC to WAV at all, and it wouldn't go from FLAC to anything else until it was tagless. Odd.
Hi Mike,
if you can send me your album via https://www.wetransfer.com I can try to convert for you using Audio Converter Pro and send you back.
Kacper
Mike - had similar problems with FLAC files of early Led Zepp albums. Something to do with the way metadata was originally encoded.
I just left in FLAC.
Whoa too much info but thanks anyway. Yes it plays OK in FLAC. Thanks for the offer Kacper, I will try (copy first) stripping out the metadata & see how that works out, or maybe just keep it as FLAC. Whatever its time to put it down & assume domestic duties (taxi driver, bag carrier & bill payer) for the rest of the weekend
You welcome Mike
I have just tried with one of my albums (flac) and didn't work either.
(from AIFF to WAV - no problem at all)
Mike,
I usually check the tags of downloaded flac files using mp3tag and on occasion, if I've tried to alter the tags I've come across a message that the files are either read only or write protected. Mp3tag does give you the option to disable this write protection and change the tags. Perhaps this write protection is what is preventing you from converting the flacs to other formats.
It might also be worthwhile checking the file properties to see if the "Read only" box is checked.
Back home after a night away, unpacked & made a brew, as you do. Opened up the laptop to start over on this problem, within a nana second I saw it !!! a real dumbo DOH moment, big embarrassment = WRONG "PATH". I normally (always) have the path set to source & it visibly adds the WAV tracks to the file & codec that the download arrived with. Because I could not see it doing this I assumed it was not converting, but It was, except it was writing to another folder. I must have made the change, but why as there was no reason, plus it was OK last time I used it about 5 days ago. ......... sorry folks
You won't be the last....
Ok Mike - glad to see the process worked.

More haste, less speed & engage brain next time. I was in too much of a hurry to get it on a USB in WAV for the car journey yesterday.
