UPnP control point for mu-so?
Posted by: Igor Bliznyukov on 17 October 2016
dear community,
since the Naim app is not capable to handle shuffle and playlists are limited to 500 entries I'm looking for an alternative control point (android & osx) to control mu-so and streaming from upnp server (minimserver). Kinsky android app can connect to the mu-so and server but unable to switch tracks on the mu-so. Any hints?
PS the Naim app is horrible.. is buggy (sometimes mu-so disappears), the features are below average..
For Android, I'd suggest you give BubbleUpnp a try. It works perfectly with minimserver and has a much nicer user interface than the Naim app. On Muso, it supports everything except gapless and seek to time, although if you need to do that you can simply use the Naim app to pick up the currently playing track and use that to fast forward/back. Little cheat but it works :-)

Igor - if Mu-So 'disappears' from your NAIM app, than I'm sorry to say but most likely there is a problem with your network and how it's been implemented and how it handles streaming from your UPnP server / NAS.
Playlists should always be built on a server, not via an app. You can then shuffle their content.

Thanks a lot! BubbleUPnP works like a charm. The only thing which I didn't understood yet is the shuffle limitation for whole library (amount of tracks) but maybe it is because I'm trying a free version.

Adam, can you be more specific please - what protocol causes that? I tried another control point and it is stable like a rock

Igor - I'm not a network expert, but more of a practicioner. From what I understand most of the challenges in wired streaming is caused by problems with: DHCP (so IP address assignment) IGMP snooping (best solution for that is to use unmanaged switches).
From my experience good results are achieved when using Apple Airport Extreme as a network 'starting point', connected via a LAN cable to an ISP supplied modem / router. It is purposly designed to handle home network applications and require almost no setup. Many forum members (including me) report good and stable results with such solutions.
Adam, I'm a network engineer and believe me, my internal network has no issues with IGMP snooping etc . I didn't tried to make a dump yet but from what I see it looks like an issue connected to the default timers/discovery mechanism in the Naim app.
Thanks to Naimsayer the problem is solved - bubbleupnp is an excellent piece of SW, works like a charm. I warmly recommend it over standard Naim app. Basically the only thing standard app does well (ok, if it managed to discover the system ) is to switch inputs
Igor, my home network did have IGMP snooping and timer issues which were reliant on wifi clients maintaining statuses for other group members on the network. I had a mare using BubbleUpnp - I had better luck with the Naim IOS app - but would still find sometimes devices would disappear or take time (>10 secs) to reappear using SSDP and in the Naim app... after some investigation with my trusty wireshark I could see that indeed there was an issue relying on clients to use use SSDP readvertisements - it was inconsistent and timeouts would occur.
Therefore my solution, (I am also a network engineer/architect) was to enable an IGMP Querier on one of managed switches, this as I am sure you know helps by regularly forcing an update of group memberships from a reliable network wired connection. Once I did this I found BubbleUpnp worked well, and the Naim app almost instantaneously showed the media servers and streamers in its screens - no wait or spinning circles anymore. I also disabled IGMP snooping on my consumer equipment such as my Apple Airport devices.
Now clearly most don't do this and have either a very simple home network or are prepared to put up with a smallish delay or occasional disappearing devices. As an engineer I wasn't and so that was my solution.......

Who says the Naim app can't handle shuffle? Mine can.
I don't see a shuffle feature on the Android app. Am I missing something? Asset does seem to do a shuffle feature when you filter on All Artists. I can't shuffle my whole collection or tracks within a selected album. The version of the app on my iPad will shuffle tracks in an album and offers this as an app feature rather than a server feature.
It's a while since I had the Android app, but on the iOS you go to the play queue, click the three dots in the top right corner and select the shuffle icon (two inter-crossing lines)...
