Power on thump on NAP250 DR?

Posted by: Julius on 17 October 2016

Dear Members,

I have just bought a second hand NAP250 DR. I read a review somewhere stating that the new NAP250 DR does not make that loud thump at power on.

My sample does however. What is your experience with the new DR amp?

Thanks in advance.

I cannot speak for the 250, but the new 200DR still makes a thump, so I would only assume the 250 DR would as well.

Mine makes more of a metallic ting than a thump if this helps

So does mine. It's very different the the thump that previous versions made.

I had NAP200 before, I'd say compared to that the "thump" is more subdued, certainly less loud and maybe not so deep sounding...I wouldn't call it metallic though.

It's a sort of boink, which seems to come from the box itself.

I still have a quiet thump from my NAP 250DR. Different than an olive 250 thump, which was more like a kick
The new one seems to be a bit more 'metallic'.

Just as Rattlesnaic and HH say, my 250DR makes a tingy boink when you turn it on, but from the black box. Nothing from the loudspeakers that I have noticed, but I have only turned it on about three times in the 9 months I've had it as its been on all the time except for a couple of power downs when I changed the loudspeaker cables.

best

Same for mine too

If you switch it on and  leave it on, it will only 'ting', 'boink',  or 'thump' once, unless the signal source demands otherwise.

Just capacitors..Somewtimes an issue ' knackered caps drying out 'sometimes not an issue and in the design of the amp..I have amps that bump when turned on ..Crackles and pops are usually a better indicator of  problems when music playing..I had an old crimson amp that poped and banged for years but sounded wonderful..

I would say the review is incorrect, 250DR here as well, & I get turn on/off noise.  Haven't really paid too much attention (as I don't switch on/off all that often) but I believe its fairly similar to my previous 200 (may be slightly less but again, haven't paid too much attention).  Was he maybe referring to no thump from the speakers themselves?  I'm thinking the noise from turn on isn't a speaker thump but more so the transformer & then on turn off the noise is from the speakers (IIRC).

Indeed. And the power off on the DR takes appreciably longer and the mild "tick" sound through the speakers just before the light goes out seems to have vanished entirely.

I read that review too. Rather blissful to report that my brand new NAP250 DR arrived yesterday, however, as a result of that review comment, it surprised me by making a little thump (from the speakers) when turned on for the first time. Nowhere near the thump my old 200 made, but you could tell it was takung a tight grip of those cones!

A pretty subdued thump from mine.

My 250dr makes a metallic boink like ringing noise.

The metalic bell tone should only be from the unit itself I thought. It's unique to the 250dr and from my tests is only when the unit is physically cool when the power button is pressed. Power cycling a warm 250dr should only result in the quietest tick from the speakers.
