Low level mains buzz from left speaker only

Posted by: Klyde on 18 October 2016

The buzz gets slightly louder on advancing the volume control to 100%.  I've been experiencing this for 2 days now.  Not changed anything for a while.  Switched off DAC V1, and still hear buzzing.  The DAC V1 and 250.2 were bought 2 years ago, the 82 and HC a little later but both were serviced.  Any ideas re how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

This may help: Last weekend I was called to look at a Naim system exhibiting a similar buzz problem. It turned out that the 250 was in need of a service.

How old is your 250.2 and has it ever been serviced?

Peter

Hi Peter, my 250.2 is only 2 yrs old. I powered the system down this afternoon, upon restarting the buzz was gone, but after playing a few tracks it was back again.

Thanks for your reply.

Phil

Is there anything else connected to your pre-amp?

I presume you are using a DIN interconnect?

The reason for my question is: there may be a loose connection on one of the sources (naimly earth / neagative in your buzzing channel).

Alternatively your may be experiencing a ground loop problem (normally, however, the buzzing would be audible in both channels).

Hi Adam, thanks for your reply. Yes it's a Chord DIN interconnect from phono out of DAC V1. I'll get round to checking connections tomorrow.

A 4 pin to 5 pin to nap 82? It it's Chord it may only have 3 pins as opposed to 5. One of them may be a bit loose or dirty. Also those Chord DIN plugs may be a bit loose or get twisted in their sockets if a cable gets strained.

Try cleaning all connections by repeatedly inserting the plugs into their respective sockets on the V1, NAP, HiCap and NAP.

Additional to Adams suggestions,  I would try a swapping boxes - maybe bring in one of the UQ's - different preamp inputs, change IC's & swap speaker cable (channels) around to eliminate & prove its a problem in the 250 left channel - or not.  Then like Peter says,  a service,  it may only be 2 years old,  but something can go defective no matter what age.

Many thanks Adam & Mike, I'll Try your suggestions tomorrow.

Sadly, I didn't get round to following your suggestions today, people. Heavy time compression going on in the bunker! Maybe some sort of temporal warp thingy going on, but since Newtonian gravity and Einstein have been proved wrong I'll post results as soon as I can.

I stripped down the system today, and reassembled it. The Buzz is gone, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it returned. I will try all your suggestions if that is the case.
