Production of Super Lumina speaker cables on hold?

Posted by: joeribt on 21 October 2016

I just received my pair of SL speaker cables only to find out they sit too loose in their sockets, to such an extent that they are about to fall out. My dealer tells me the production is on hold after Naim noticed the problem as well. Would this mean they have changed the make of the plugs? What are your experiences with the plugs?

Certainly an issue of poor quality control, given the stated level of these cables. To me this comes after I also returned a faulty and brand new N-272 the other week...

The banana plugs on my SL speaker cables fit rather tightly in my speaker's sockets.

This sounds a very strange fault. Even if Naim have changed the banana plugs on the SL speaker cables, surely they are a standard size to ensure an interference fit into speaker sockets. And why on earth was this not tested/spotted before cables left the factory.

Plain weird.

Tight fit here. I got mine when SL speaker cable first went on sale.

Mine are OK - both sets.

I've noticed them fitting rather loosely compared to other bananas. My speaker sockets are angled upwards, so they wouldn't just fall out without being pulled, but they are far from a tight fit.

SL must stand for Super Loose......and they cost how much ?

Have not noticed this, they are fine, have them already quite long...

Slow to halt production of shabby cables.

PS; Naim theses cables are very expensive!!

Good opportunity to improve their timing? They called even call them SL2

I have the same issue. Brand new SL cables sit loose in their sockets.

The very early SL speaker cables (as initially provided only to full Statement owners) didn't have split pin banana plugs (and said plugs weren't silver plated).  Do yours have split pins?

Mine are recent(ish) and have solid ends, except for the spring. Whether they are silver plated.....

Mine are split pins and were produced in the last few weeks ago. Apparently a problem with the pins, which Naim should have been able to identify before selling these.

As they should have been able to identify plugs which self destruct on over priced interconnect  cables...

Got mine this week and they are extremely loose in the amplifier sockets a better fit in the speakers but I assume that is due to the type of socket used.

Out of interest I have measured the diameter of the banana plugs on the SL cables the maximum reading on the spring clip section is 4.08mm and if you look at the spring clip running along the length of the plug it hardly protrudes at all this on all plugs

The same measurement on the NAC A5 cable plug is 4.70mm and these have a nice interference fit.

So it looks as if JOERIBT has hit the nail on the head with his comment.

PCD, if you're having any issue with the connectors the you should contact your supplying dealer who will arrange repair or replacement with Naim.

I have and he will.

In my case the cable are not what I would call loose, but they are not a tight fit, I guess if they don't rattle in the socket then the contact should be fine and won't affect sound quality, I tried to move the banana plug sideways to see if there was any motion and there isn't, that said I can pull them out with the slightest of effort, they are definitely less tight than my NACA ever used to be.

I went back and checked all my SL speaker banana plugs at both ends.

Mine were in the first batch of SL leads which went on general; sale, once all the Statement stuff was launched.

B&W 802D Mk2 at one end, 500 at the other.

Very tight. So tight they are difficult to remove and were difficult to plug in now that I think about it.

I hope that's of some help for comparative purposes.

Thanks Harry, totally different to mine useful information indeed.

I was an early adopter of SL speaker leads and mine are the same as Harry's - difficult to insert and equally difficult to remove (a good thing I would suggest). The design and diameter of the latest iteration of SL speaker lead plugs must be rather different.

Bit of a boo boo by Naim if the new plugs are not intended to be so loose, and something that would have been easy to check before production and despatch. Which makes me think maybe the new plugs are supposed to be this way although it appears that some sets have been accepted back by dealers for return to HQ.

Very strange.

Slightly related.

MY S600s were a demo set and the Ovator-specific plugs for the speaker-end of the cable didn't come with them. I modded the little plastic boxes on my NACA5  cables so the pin spacing worked, but the pins are quite a loose fit on the sockets. I was not bothered, but am now paranoid, after reading this thread. Are Ovator sockets different diameter than standard sockets? Do I need special pins?

I don't think they were intended this way as they fall out of Naim's own amps! This is something that Naim should have avoided, especially since these are high-end cables with a high-end price.

It's good to have the special Ovator plugs if you use NACA5 or any other speaker cable, except for SL. Like your Ovators, my S-400 were ex-demo and came without the plugs. Just getting them now for completness sake.

SuperLumina bannanas fit into the Ovator sockets perfectly though and that is what I'm using now.

IMO, yes. Naim have thought about the mechanical engineering of their stuff so that we don't have to.
