Narrow HiFi Racks
Posted by: Dungassin on 22 October 2016
I really need to move on from the 2 metal/glass Sound Organisation racks in my study. Since replacing my 250 with a 300DR, the left hand rack has become so heavy that I can hardly lift it to put it back into its normal position.
So, what I need is a decent hifi rack of the stacking variety, so that I can load one shelf, connect up the gear on it before pushing it right back on the shelf, then put the next shelf on top, etc. etc. This would save wear and tear on my ageing back. However, the space available is limited, and I can't accommodate racks much wider than the current Sound Organisation ones (approx 500mm wide). I could probably stretch it to 530-40 mm at a pinch.
For this reason, Fraim, and Isoblue at 600mm wide are non-starters. I did think that you could buy Hutter racks made to custom measurements, but looking at their website, it would appear that is not an option, and that it is not clear from their website whether you can stack them in the way I describe.. Same applies to Quadraspire and Atacama AFAIC. Seems like the only options are to either make my own, or have some custom made.
I see that hifiracks.com Podium can be made to order, but the legs on the shelves look as if they would be so wide as to make the available space for my Naim boxes too small, bearing in mind my overall width limitation.
I would like Maple shelving if possible, to match with the n-System.
Any suggestions before I give them a ring on Monday to see what can be done?
Take a look at customdesign.co.uk. They had some nice looking racks and I'm considering one of theirs myself.
Bit left field this but Apollo Arias are stackable & 545 wide. Not the prettiest, and I'm not even sure that they still make 'em! They often come up on a well known action site.
I'm having two of those made as an experiment. Designed to be stackable.

Glass is toughened, 10 mm thick, sized like a Fraim glass shelf.
DG - my Hutter rack is only 500mm wide and Maple finish.
i think this width still available - no?

Pirating the Sound Factory Tripod? I've got 2 sets of those in the living room with the active Olive system. ![]()
Yes, my Hutter is 500m too, perfect for Naim full width units and can be built up from the bottom. However, I believe there is no longer a UK distributor - Kudos were going to take it on but I understand it's not happening.

Thanks, I'll have a look at their website.

Actually this was designed by a small outfit called Ostoja, on the outskirts of Warsaw. I took it off their main rack.

Their website quotes 585mm width, and doesn't mention anything about making custom widths.

Look around at different models, the Concept 400 is 485mm

So they DO make 500mm width? Not at all clear from their website if true. Think I'll drop them an email on Monday to find out. IIRC Paul from Cymbiosis did say something about them selling Hutter when he was here installing the 300DR. The 'build up from the bottom' bit is essential, so thanks for letting me know that. Think I'd need a total of 2 hifi bases and 7 add on shelves. My games equipment, Blurary etc can just go on the little Maple unit I had one of our local joiners knock up for me.
I'm sure Hutter used to do 2 different widths, the narrower being 500mm, but their website no longer lists this option, so maybe they discontinued it.
How about using a couple of trolleyjacks to lift the rack and then roll it into place?
Hutter do definitely still do 500mm width racks - I bought mine last year and am vey happy with it. I also was only interested in a narrow rack which unfortunately ruled Fraim out of my choices.
The Hutter website didn't show it then either, but they are very responsive if you e mail them direct. Mine was ordered via my local dealer, who ordered it through Kudos, but as is mentioned above, they didn't take on the distributorship in the end as far as I am aware.

I was in Cymbiosis recently and what they have is some left-over Hutter - various finishes and I think in the wider version. Try calling Wayne.

If you get Hutter you should avoid taking it apart and putting it back together too often, or the connections get a bit loose and wobbly.

I don't own any ...
Funnily enough, this is a suggestion I made to the people at Cymbiosis to make shifting/changing loudspeakers for demonstration, After all, Kudos Titans etc are bl**dy heavy!

I sent an email to Hutter last night. If it's all OK, I've just got to persuade SWMBO (sigh)

Yes, you can stack Hutters this way.
Hutter also still make the narrow version, I have 8 levels of them since last year.
you can contact Hutter in Austria directly and they will ship directly from the factory. I received my levels via this route since there was no longer a distributor in my country.
I have custom width Hi-Fi Racks Ltd Podium Reference in solid oak satin finish.
One rack is 570mm wide x 400mm deep and is a perfect fit for my turntable, NAC-N 272 and NAP 250 DR. The second rack is 350mm wide x 400mm and is perfect for my Stageline and Hi-Cap DR : System Pics 2016
They make racks of any reasonable size and have high WAF.
One final thought re Hutter DG. You mentioned you needed 2 towers. Wondering if these go side by side or separated? Reason I ask is that Hutter also do a double width rack that is only 960mm wide, i.e. Even narrower than 2x 500mm racks.
When recently visiting the prophet from Leicester for some turntable work, we discussed racks as I have a Hutter myself. Seems the Kudos gig with Hutter may be off as intimated earlier. However, they have some local joiner chap who is making racks for them in a narrow and stackable design that may be just the ticket. Various wood finishes. Triangular type of construction. Wood frame with glass shelves on balls. Sounds all right too. An auspicious rack debut.
Phil (not Paul, sorry!) from Cymbiosis got in touch with me about this, and said that although they did (or still do?) Hutter racks, they (and Kudos) have been unable to contact Hutter for some time. He also said that they have a new bespoke range of racks being made locally (by one of their customers?) and emailed me a couple of photos of them. I won't put them on here unless he gives me permission.
Cymbiosis do still have some Hutter racks in their showroom, but each shelf is a different wood (presumably for demonstration purposes). I didn't ask what width they were!
Hutter did send me an email a week after I emailed them. This tells me that they still make the 500mm wide racks, but the depth is only 400mm (adequate for most purposes, but possibly not for my Arcam AVR850.
To cut a long story short, I went to Cymbiosis yesterday and viewed the racks. They are wood (of any type you like), with thick glass shelves, with a tripod design, and are stackable. The maker will produce them to order, and as such can adjust them to the customers requirements. The width was 525mm (ideal for me). The bottom shelf of the rack is basically the base (with adjustable feet), and the others are ones to stack on top of it
I have ordered 2 sets of racks in Maple - one of 6 shelves, and the other of 2 shelves. The 2 shelf one is going to use the standard frame, but the glass is going to be deeper on the top shelf to accommodate the Arcam. Cost? £250 per standard shelf, but the non-standard shelf may be a little dearer.
I am told that soundwise they are better than the Isoblue.

Is it the Hutter rack that you are getting?
