uniti loses network and does not reconnect
Posted by: gert on 25 October 2016
Hello,
did anybody have this problem with his uniti (or other naim streamer) and knows what could cause this issue?
My uniti 1 (with streaming hardware v3) loses the network connection frequently since 2 or 3 weeks. Streamed music stops playing. If I switch to internet radio or back to upnp the uniti says that it wants to initialize the network again, but nothing happens anymore. I have to turn the device off and on again. Then it works fine again until the next time (maybe 3 or 6 or more tracks later).
It happens if listening to qobuz streams via the Bubble-UPnP-Server that is running on my NAS. (The last weeks this was the main streaming source that I did use.) Yesterday I have tried if the problems shows up if listening to radio paradise and it did happen there, too. But there seems not to be a problem with listening to music streamed from my NAS in my LAN (at least until now).
I already have restarted my internet router (a fritz-box) and changed the LAN port that the uniti is hardwired to. But the issue still did happen. I do not know what could have changed in my network. I cannot remember a firmware update of the router or something similar.
So if anybody has an idea what I could try or test, I would be very thankful.
Greetings
Gert
My current unitiserve (the one it replaced was the same) loses a network connection about once a day, often overnight. A reboot of the US is the only solution.
I become aware of this because the iPhone/iPad/n-serve app won't connect to the US and I can't, for example, edit metadata or rip cds.
However I can still access the US downloads folder from my MacBook and add files.
I can also play from the US into a Mu-so using the Mu-so app which does recognise the US. Very odd.
Set-up is router (wireless off) - Airport Extreme (wireless on) - switch - US/Mu-so.

This has been covered many times on the forum. From your description the symptoms are classic network related ones. More specifically they point to a router, which you have received from your internet service provider and the way it handles streaming traffic from UPnP servers.
This is a classic streaming network set up (picture courtesy of Mike-B).
Also please ensure that your router has DHCP running (in other words - do not use fixed IP addresses).
A switch will also help your network manage its traffic.

It sounds to me like the DHCP feature of your router is getting flakey. It should work better, but if it won't, you could use static IP addresses to bridge the gap until you get a more reliable router. If you do go static, be sure to use only addresses outside the DHCP range as configured on your router; and keep a list, so you don't create a conflict by using an address more than once. If that sounds too complex, go for the new router sooner.
Good luck.
Nick
Thank you for your suggestions.
Usually the router (an AVM fritzbox) is a very solid and good working router. I have got this one year ago from my provider and it always did work very reliable. Only the last few weeks I have got these problems. I did not know that something has changed regarding the router. The latest firmware already was released in july, so the issue does not seem related to an update of the router.
I am sure that placing a switch in front of the router will not help. Usually you do this if you have IGMP-problems, so if the router does not handle the IGMP-broadcast packages correctly. This means that if discovering of the upnp server or the streamer does take very long (up to several minutes) or does not work at all, the switch will help. But in my case UPnP-streaming is the only streaming that seems to work without a problem.
Internet radio and streaming from qobuz lead into the problem. But if it was a bad internet connection or a server issue, the stream would break, but the network connection of the uniti should still work, what is not the case.
Maybe it is a DHCP problem. But why happens the problem after the device already has got an IP address? But it is a good idea to try a static IP just for testing if the issue still happens then.
If somebody has another idea, I still welcome any hints.

Well - I still reckon it is your router.
If you search the forum and find the number of recent threads, at the endnof the day in most cases a router was a root cause of the problem.
Many forum members end up purchasing an Apple Airport Extreme which defines their network. Stable results have been reported. So an ISP provides router ends up being a modem only, with a lan cable between the old router and the apple one.
The above assumes you have checked all the lan cables and they are all ok.
An Apple Airport Extreme only will help with wifi issues. In my case the uniti is hard wired to the router, so I think another wifi access point will not help here.
I already did change the LAN port of the wall socket that leads into another LAN port into the router. But it is an idea to swap the LAN cable between uniti and the wall socket. But if it was an cable issue the problem should appear also with streaming from the local UPnP-server, shouldn't it?
Hi Gert
You have a good router. I use one myself. The others just assume that it is junk because it was supplied by your provider. (doesn't mean that it hasn't failed though)
I suspect that it is the modem function that is playing up. Does your general internet use work perfectly?
What do you do to fix it? NAS restart, Uniti restart, Fritzbox restart, ......

Gert - up to you.
I only suggested a solution which works for other users.
And no - Apple Airprot is not only about wi-fi but about network management too.

I am thankful for every hint that I can try. But certainly I have to filter a bit what I think will help and what not. As the fritzbox generally does work fine I think it is not such a good idea to switch to another router.

All other devices (PCs, hard wired or via an asus wifi access point that itself is also hard wired to the router, Smartphones and tablets via wifi, ... all do work flawlessly). The internet connection is very stable and fast (50MBit DSL). The problem also occurs if no other PCs are turned on. I first thought that it might have to do with heavy downloads that happen in that moment. But in this case only the internet stream would drop. The network connection to the LAN should still work fine after this.
The only thing that does help is to restart the uniti.
I have tried a fritzbox restart yesterday. While it rebooted I saw that the uniti reported the completely missing network link. After the fritzbox was up and running again, the uniti did tried again to initialize the network, but hung there again. Nothing happened, even no timeout occured in approximately 2 minutes. So I had to restart the uniti again what did help.
Restarting of the NAS is a good idea to test. I will try this the next time the issue occurs.

What you describe are classic symptoms of a router which has problems working well with music streaming.

Anyway.
Does Qobuz and other internet streaming work ok on your other devices_

But why does it happen the last few weeks only? I am using qobuz-Streaming since may already. And internet radio since 5 years without any issue. (4 years with the predecessor model of the fritz box and 1 year with the current version.) I do not think that the router has a problem generally. Maybe something did break though.

I did stream to my smartphone (internet radio and qobuz) several times without any problem, but not recently. I could test this again. Thank you.

I once had similar symptoms to the ones you describe, when one of the cables terminating at a patch panel was damaged (one of the strands at the socket got dislodged). That's why I asked earlier if you've checked all the connection cables.
I have tested the uniti at a friend's home now, so in another network. There it had lost the network, too, after a while. So I think it is sure that the uniti has a problem somehow and I have to bring it in for letting it fixed.

Well - that doesn't prove anything I'm afraid. But if you believe Uniti is faulty, there isn't much we can help you with.
Just to close this topic and give you some feedback in case somebody is interested:
I have got back my uniti two weeks ago now. The naim support could not really reproduce the faulty behaviour, but I have the feeling that they had noticed some other issues maybe. Anyway, they have decided to exchange the new v3 streaming board with another one. With this new board the uniti does play without any issues again in my home network. Great! I am so happy!
(I know, this still does not prove anything. Maybe my fritzbox router did come to hate the first instance of the streaming board but works friendly together with the new one!?)
A big thank you to the naim support! It took some weeks to get my uniti back, but the whole investigation and hardware exchange was done on warranty, as I had upgraded the uniti 1 only some months ago to the new streaming board.
Glad the music is flowing again.
Enjoy!
Thank you!
