Nap 250 back from service query (not sure I'm happy with the dealer)

Posted by: Jamesie on 29 October 2016

hi all , I have just picked up my Nap 250 back from service from Salisbury , upon getting home and looking at the job sheet it appears that ,

A , I have had my full service.

B , parts used show a box and labels with all internal packaging.

i did NOT have the unit returned with any packaging at all , even though it appears this is paid for in with the cost of my service , I phoned the dealer and they said, as I didn't take it in to them in a box and they put it in a box to send it away ,it was returned by naim in a new box buy THEY (the dealership) have kept my box , this is an authorised dealer that I was told to take it to by Naim, there was no mention that I had to package it at all as this is an authorised dealer, I was of the understanding that this is all part of the dealerships service that they provide in return for the priveledge of being chosen as an authorised dealership .

the parts listed that I have not been given are as follows,,,,,,,,, 2 x end cap foam reference ,,,,,1 x inner wrap large carton reference ,,,,,1 x large carton printed reference ,,,,,,1 x label blank 73 x 174 white ,   1 x silica gel sachet.

does this seem right to any of you , surely as it is all listed on my job sheet and I have paid for it all shouldn't I have been given my amp back with these items? ,,,,what right has the dealer got to take any of this away from me , in fact what right does the dealer have to open the box that is being returned to me by Naim , they are just a middle man as a point of contact for collection and returns. Should I give Salisbury a call and express my concerns?

I think the same as Richard - the easiest course should be to talk to your dealer about why they've kept the packaging. If they explain it's to replace chargeable packaging that they used to send your unit in then that seems fair enough. The next question then is how much it would cost to buy the packaging from them - this might be quite reasonable. Failing that perhaps you can enquire of Naim if they can provide new packaging for your amp - again explaining what has happened.

I'm not sure you have many other options here that won't just lead to stress and hassle? Of course, if you're not going to move the amp again in a hurry then you may just want to not bother...

Assuming your dealer sent your item off in a correct box which is theirs and I assume they want back, Naim would only supply a new box if the one that arrived at them was battered in transit. This would be not be your dealer's fault. Have you still got your original box? If you have I'd just let it be, tell them you don't like their attitude and leave it at that.

How's the amp?

As I recall, I stated that the cost of the box was not included in the service cost and that if you didn't pay extra for the box it didn't belong to you.

What part of that information is not definitive enough for you?

This thread really needs to be closed. The OP is obviously incapable of logical thought. How many times does it have to be explained that he hasn't paid for packaging. Amp dropped off naked, amp returned naked, but serviced. Dealer provides packaging, dealer keeps returned packaging. For Christ's sake, how much simpler does it have to be to be understood?

A new Naim box costs £60 or £70, I paid it once. So unless you've paid for the box, it wouldn't be yours. IMHO

The dealer would have packed your amp in one of their boxes from a display/demo unit in order to send to Naim. they would expect to keep the box, or one similar, on its return for same demo unit.

The servicing prices quoted do not include new box and packaging.

I'd let this one go if I were you and enjoy the 250

Box or no box is not a big deal. I think the underlying thing is that you are really happy with your dealer or not?

To the contrary, I've been quite entertained and to a small extent enlightened.

The cost of the service doesn't normally include the packaging. The point I was making, perhaps not well, is that this a matter between you and your dealer and that is the only way it can be resolved. Airing it here adds nothing. If you paid for the packaging above and beyond the normal service charge then it should be yours, but if not, it shouldn't, one would think.

As I  no longer had the original packaging, I offered to pay for a new box if they were more comfortable shipping that way. I was told boxes are free of charge for servicing and got my DRed 250 back in brand new packaging. They'd even reprinted the product labels. No charge on this. When I asked my dealer he said Naim always ship units back in Naim boxes and wasn't sure where I'd got the idea they were chargeable from.

Jamesie, It is disappointing if the happy "vibe" of receiving new or serviced kit is dented when something appears off. Don't sweat it mate, the dealer opening the box is probably good, just in case something was missing inside or the like, which seems to happen now and then. Do you have the original box? If so at least you have one to use in the future. Ask your dealer, it can probably be sorted out pretty easily, Naim care about it's success and us the customers for sure. Too many competitors to stuff us around so it's rarely if ever greed or spite.  I have found this forum pretty good, most of the time there are many strangers willing to share quite complex questions or even dumb ones (I've posted a few!) and it's free of charge and convivial.  Sometimes the real meaning of comments on these online discussions become muddied because we don't accurately gauge the tone of the words we read or how our words are received. As it's not face to face it can be misconstrued. Of course sometimes people you have never met take offence when non was intended, or can be outright rude, that's a part of life everywhere, exactly why is a bit of a mystery but so be it.  I have made both mistakes, navigating this modern form of communications in this way can take a little time to understand. It is an interesting social experiment reading comments on forums, there are always times people are so passionate about their hobby and brand that it can skew common sense, don't take it to heart mate. That said, are you happy with your new amp? Rock on and enjoy it!!!  If you feel you have been spoken to rudely, stand up for yourself for sure, but don't take it to heart. At the end of the day, it's just an audio forum, considering the state of affairs of the world we have bigger problems to worry about.

Morning Jamesie,

I'm sorry to read of what's happened for you, which seems to be based upon a misunderstanding of what you were required to do as a naim customer when a piece of your equipment goes in for service. I'm hopeful that a bit of a chat with your dealer can sort this out for you.

Oh, and the forum is not normally hostile.

How's the amp btw?

Chris

I've had a little tidy up of the thread and removed a few of the less helpful (and unpleasant) comments.

Jamesie, its a great shame, but when things are not fully communicated or made clear then there's always the risk of ill feeling. I would explain your sense of disappointment with your dealer. A good dealer will listen and want to find a way to satisfactorily resolve the matter, after all they want your continued business, don't they? And if not, well...

A pity I was just about to read selected morsels to my wife over breakfast. I personally think the OPs question is a fair one. Was there a price for eack item (foam, gel, etc. ) leading to a cumulative cost? Or maybe the items were listed 'gratis' and included on the bill solely for stock control purposes?

I'm surprised the dealer didnt bring the amp in the box to your house, unpacked it and fitted it to your system, ensuring everything was working fine.

Then an appropriate discussion of the box could have taken place. Do you want to keep it? If so pay for it as part of the bill. Let the dealer have it? If so, there is a deal to be done -- its not going to be brand new, 250 amps are *heavy* and the box sustains significant wear and tear in transit (so your amp doesnt!)

I confess I am happy for peter@cymbiosis to send me stuff by courier and to leave me to sort it out. But thats because both of us are happy to do that. And I'm moderately confident that I know what I am doing.

If the dealer opens at 9.00am in the morning hopefully this subject should be all boxed up by about 9.30ish.

We could all stand outside as a guard of honour singing Little Boxes in perfect harmony. There should be plenty of cheap overnight accommodation in Torbay at this time of year. Though tomorrow is Halloween of course. I see a thread next year called The Box 2.
